Breeders' Futurity (G1) romper SQUARE EDDIE (Smart Strike), who has been

sidelined by sore shins since early February, returned to the worktab at

Hollywood Park Sunday.

The Doug O'Neill pupil traveled three furlongs in :37 2/5, breezing, on the

Cushion Track. It was his first recorded work since February 2, when he sizzled

five furlongs in a bullet :58 4/5.

"We still have the (Kentucky) Derby (G1) in mind," O'Neill declared after

Sunday's work.

Square Eddie has not raced since his runner-up effort to The Pamplemousse (Kafwain)

in the January 17 San Rafael S. (G3) at Santa Anita.

Last Thursday, Square Eddie was installed as the 5-2 winter-book favorite for

the Queen's Plate, a classic race for Canadian-breds on June 21 at Woodbine.

Square Eddie was bred in Ontario and races for J. Paul Reddam, a native of

Windsor, Ontario.

One horse has turned the Kentucky Derby/Queen's Plate double -- Hall of Famer

Northern Dancer, who achieved the feat in 1964. Northern Dancer appears in the

third generation of Square Eddie's pedigree. The three-year-old is out of a mare

by El Gran Senor, a son of Northern Dancer.
