Street Sense breezes under Twin Spires

Kentucky Derby (G1) hero STREET SENSE (Street Cry [Ire]) continued his

preparation for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) with a four-furlong

workout at Churchill Downs on Tuesday. The dark bay colt breezed a half-mile in

:48 2/5 under jockey Calvin Borel, which ranked as the seventh fastest of 38

works at the distance.

The Carl Nafzger trainee was timed in fractions of :13, :25 1/5 and :37.

Street Sense finished strongly, galloping out five furlongs in 1:00 2/5 and six

furlongs in 1:12 2/5.

The workout by Street Sense was his first since finishing second to Hard Spun

(Danzig) in the Kentucky Cup Classic S. (G2) on September 29 on Polytrack at

Turfway Park. Nafzger was pleased with the move that he compared to the one

prior to the colt's victory in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3).

"We got what we wanted," Nafzger said. "We needed that just like we needed

Tampa."

"He came back so much better after that Polytrack race," Borel said. "It's

amazing. I don't know why and I don't know what it (a race on Polytrack) does to

him. I don't know if he just gets a lot of out of it, or it gets him keyed

up. But he's doing good -- perfect."

Despite his setback in the Kentucky Cup Classic, Borel remained very

optimistic about the Kentucky Derby winner's chances in the 1 1/4-mile Breeders'

Cup Classic on October 27 at Monmouth Park.

"I'm not worried -- I know what kind of horse he is," Borel said. "You've got

to throw the last one (Kentucky Cup Classic) away. I couldn't ride him like I

wanted, and Carl knows that. He's not a horse that's going to lay close to the

lead and stuff like that. We'll have some pace next time...I think you'll see a

totally different race. I'll be surprised if he gets beat."

Street Sense, last year's champion two-year-old, is expected to work one more

time at Churchill Downs before traveling to Monmouth Park about 10 days before

the Breeders' Cup.
