Kentucky Derby (G1) hero STREET SENSE (Street Cry [Ire]), and CURLIN (Smart

Strike), who edged the Derby winner to capture a memorable renewal of the

Preakness S. (G1), each worked five furlongs on a fast track at Churchill Downs

on Monday.

Street Sense

covered the distance in 1:02 2/5 under jockey Calvin Borel

shortly after the morning break for track maintenance. Curlin, who had

regular exercise rider Carmen Rosas in the saddle, worked the same distance in

1:03 1/5 at approximately 6:20 a.m. (EDT). It was the first timed workout for Curlin since he was narrowly beaten by the Kentucky Oaks

(G1) queen Rags

to Riches (A.P. Indy) in the Belmont S. (G1) on June 9.

The Carl Nafzger-trained Street Sense started slowly, but finished quickly in his work.

The

James Tafel homebred was timed

in fractions of :14, :27, :39 2/5 and :51. Street Sense galloped out six furlongs in

1:14 3/5.

"He relaxed

early and finished well," Nafzger said. "He listened to Calvin real well this

morning."

It was the

second work for the Kentucky Derby winner since his narrow loss to Curlin in the

May 19 Preakness. Street Sense is expected to return to competition in

either the $500,000 Jim Dandy (G2) on July 29 at Saratoga or the $1 million

Haskell Invitational (G1) on August 5 at Monmouth Park.

The Steve Asmussen-trained Curlin, who is owned by a partnership that includes Stonestreet

Farm, Padua Stable, George Bolton and Midnight Cry Stable, was clocked in

fractions of :13 4/5, :27, :38 4/5 and :51. The chestnut colt galloped out six furlongs in

1:17 2/5.

"I asked for

1:03 and I got 1:03," Asmussen said. "He's an awesome horse."

Curlin had

turned in a series of strong gallops and Asmussen was happy with his classic

winner as the colt prepares to launch a summer/fall campaign that is expected to

culminate with a run in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) on October 27

at Monmouth Park.

"I don't

think that he's lost any sharpness," Asmussen said. "He's just happy and

healthy."

Asmussen is pointing Curlin toward the Haskell. He plans to work Curlin once more

under the Twin Spires before the colt flies to Albany, New York, and then travels by van to

join Asmussen's stable at Saratoga on July 12.

"We'll keep

our routine where it's at," Asmussen said. "We'll have plenty in us before we

leave here, so we're not obligated (to that schedule) when you get up there,

because you never know what will happen in New York, weather-wise."

Asmussen's

other major three-year-old, Stonestreet Stable's TIZ WONDERFUL (Tiznow), is scheduled to work

at Churchill Downs on Tuesday. The unbeaten winner of Churchill Downs'

Kentucky Jockey Club S. (G2) and Iroquois S. (G3) is being pointed toward a return

to competition in the Jim Dandy.

Also working

at Churchill Downs on Tuesday was Silverton Hill's DOMINICAN (El Corredor), the

winner of the Blue Grass S. (G1) and the 11th-place finisher in the Run for the

Roses. The

Darrin Miller trainee worked in company with stablemate

Bacetto (Kissin Kris) and traveled five furlongs in a bullet :59 4/5, the

fastest of 23 works at the distance. Dominican galloped out six furlongs in 1:12

2/5. Bacetto

completed his work in 1:00 1/5, the fourth-fastest work at the distance.
