Street Sense listed as 3-5 favorite for Travers

Last updated: 8/22/07 3:07 PM

Kentucky Derby (G1) hero STREET SENSE (Street Cry [Ire]) is the 3-5 favorite

on the morning line for Saturday's $1 million Travers S. (G1). A convincing 1

1/2-length winner of the July 29 Jim Dandy S. (G2), the champion juvenile colt

will face six rivals from post 4 with regular rider Calvin Borel. Trainer Carl

Nafzger, who saddled Unshaded to victory in the 2000 Travers, will be seeking a

rare sweep of the two premiere races for three-year-olds at the Spa after

winning last Saturday's Alabama S. (G1) with Lady Joanne (Orientate).

Street Sense has earned more than $3.4 million from a 10-5-3-2 career line.

The dark bay colt rallied fast up the rail at Churchill Downs to win the

Kentucky Derby by 2 1/4 lengths and missed by only a head when second in the

Preakness S. (G1). He also owns a victory in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) this

season and finished second by a nose in the Blue Grass S. (G1). The Jim Tafel

homebred captured last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) by 10 lengths.

"He's always done everything good," Nafzger said. "He's always been a

natural. He's always had a great mind."

Jim Dandy runner-up C P WEST (Came Home) is the 5-1 second choice on the

morning line. Conditioned by Hall of Famer Nick Zito, C P West is only a maiden

winner, but the dark bay colt owns runner-up finishes in the Futurity S. (G2) and

Withers S. (G3). He also finished fourth in the Preakness. Cornelio Velasquez

will ride.

"You go into a race like this hoping your horse has a great day," said Zito,

who won the 2004 Travers with Birdstone. "You also hope Street Sense has an off

day. He is a champion."

Peter Pan S. (G2) victor SIGHTSEEING (Pulpit) will represent Hall of Fame

trainer Shug McGaughey. Listed at 6-1, the Ogden Phipps homebred rallied nicely

for runner-up honors in the Wood Memorial S. (G1) earlier this year and finished

third in the Jim Dandy most recently. Edgar Prado will return to the saddle.

The Travers field is HELSINKI (Distorted Humor), Julien Leparoux, 20-1; C P

West; FOR YOU REPPO (El Corredor), Garrett Gomez, 20-1; Street Sense;

GRASSHOPPER (Dixie Union), Robby Albarado, 8-1; LOOSE LEAF (Notebook), Kent

Desormeaux, 12-1; and Sightseeing.

All starters will carry 126 pounds.
