Sunland Derby, Oaks canceled; Shagaf doing well after Gotham win
Sunland Derby, Oaks canceled; Shagaf doing well after
Gotham win
Sunland Park has called off both the Sunland Derby (G3) and Sunland Oaks,
each worth 50 points to the respective winners as part of the Road to the
Kentucky Derby and Oaks series. Sunland has been under quarantine since cases of
EHV-1 were diagnosed in January and, though the quarantine is expected to be
lifted March 9, trainer with Derby and Oaks aspirations have probably begun
looking elsewhere for prep/points races.
Undefeated Shagaf, winner of Saturday's Gotham (G3) at Aqueduct, exited that
race in good order, trainer Chad Brown said Sunday. The next target for the
Bernardini colt is the $1 million Wood Memorial (G1) on April 9 back at
Aqueduct.
