Synthetic specialists line up in Spinster

Last updated: 10/8/09 3:30 PM

GINGER BREW (Milwaukee Brew), INDESCRIBABLE (Pleasant Tap) and MUSHKA (Empire

Maker) will all enter Sunday's $500,000

Spinster S. (G1) at Keeneland off easy victories over stakes rivals. The

latter two actually scored in Grade 3 events, but each one is seeking her first

Grade 1 win in the 1 1/8-mile test. In fact, with the exception of SWIFT TEMPER

(Giant's Causeway), every distaffer in the race will be looking to add a top

level score to her record.

Swift Temper succeeded at the highest level last out in the Ruffian H. (G1)

at Belmont Park, drawing off in the stretch of the muddy main track test. The

Dale Romans charge will be returning to a synthetic track for the first time

since making her second career start over Turfway Park's Polytrack in fall of

2006. The chestnut ran eighth that day, and the Spinster could serve as the

final measure on whether she'll head to Santa Anita for the Breeders' Cup

Ladies' Classic (G1) on the Pro-Ride.

Ginger Brew has never raced on Pro-Ride, but the Brian Lynch trainee is no

stranger to Polytrack, posting a 4-1-0 line from five starts on Woodbine's

version of that surface. The four-year-old chestnut was named Canada's champion

three-year-old filly for 2008 following victories in the Woodbine Oaks and

Jammed Lovely S. as well as a head second in the Queen's Plate S. against the

boys. She was last seen taking the Belle Mahone S. on August 15, and will get

John Velazquez in the saddle for this contest.

Indescribable is another with a stellar record on synthetics, capturing five

races and running third three times from 10 starts. She was a dominant winner of

the Kentucky Cup Distaff (G3) last out, and will be returning to the site of her

Doubledogdare S. (G3) triumph from earlier this season. Mushka also raced during

Keeneland's spring meet, taking an off-the-turf allowance by 3 1/2 lengths, but

the Bill Mott runner has since stayed exclusive in turf races, taking the Glens

Falls H. (G3) at Saratoga most recently.

Other synthetic track alums in the Spinster include Grade 2 heroine DAWN

AFTER DAWN (Successful Appeal), who was third in the Vanity H. (G1) over

Hollywood's Cushion Track; multiple Grade 3-placed TEJIDA (Rahy), third in the

Doubledogdare in April; and BE FAIR (Exchange Rate), fourth in the Ashland S.

(G1) in her only try on an all-weather surface.

One race before the Spinster, an overflow field of 13 juveniles has been

entered to go 1 1/16 miles on the turf course in the $125,000

Bourbon

S. (G3). INTERACTIF (Broken Vow) has been assigned to tote the top weight of

123 pounds off his dominating 4 1/4-length score in the With Anticipation S.

(G3), which also served as the Todd Pletcher charge's first try on grass.

Some of his biggest rivals in the Bourbon include EXHI (Maria's Mon), an easy

front-running winner last out going the distance on Belmont's turf, and FAMILY

FOUNDATION (Repriced), a 3 3/4-length come-from-behind allowance/optional

claiming scorer over the grass at Arlington Park.
