Tanda rides the rail to victory in Railbird
TANDA (Sweetsouthernsaint) earned her third straight win on Sunday in the $100,000
Railbird S. (G3) at Hollywood Park. With jockey Alex Solis channeling Calvin
Borel, the Dan Hendricks-trained sophomore scooted through along the rail to
take command on the backstretch and held the outside rally of Switch (Quiet American)
to score by a half-length. Sent off the 2-1 second choice in the nine-filly field, Tanda returned $6, $3.40 and $2.40 for completing seven
Cushion Track furlongs in
1:21 4/5.
Southern Fireball (Southern Image) set the early pace through the initial splits of :23
4/5, but her time in front was limited. Solis had Tanda saving
ground along the rail, and the pair rushed through to take over passing the
half-mile marker in :45 3/5. The three-year-old lass maintained her momentum down the lane,
easily holding Switch and pushing her record to 6-4-1-0, $187,710.
Switch circled her rivals three wide rounding the turn but just couldn't chase
down Tanda. The John Sadler runner was worth $2.80 and $2.40 as the 8-5 favorite
and ended the $8.40 exacta ($1). All Due Respect (Value Plus) was another 2 1/4 lengths
back in third, paying $3.20 at 5-1, while Crisis of Spirit (Vindication) rounded
out the top four at 11-1. The $1 trifecta gave back $27.40 and the 1-10-4-5
superfecta ($1) totaled $123.10.
Vision in Gold (Medaglia d'Oro), Southern Fireball, Seriously (Gulch), Church Camp (Forest Camp)
and Win for M'Lou (Gilded Time) completed the order under the wire. Trainer John Sadler withdrew Stockings (Hennessy) after the chestnut miss
spiked a fever of 104 degrees Saturday morning.
"We treated her with antibiotics and it's down to 101 today," Sadler said
Sunday.
Owned by Tommy Hutton's Dream Stable's, Tanda broke her maiden on the turf at
Santa Anita in her second career start, then made her stakes bow a second-place
finish in the Sweet Life S., with both starts coming in January. She captured an
allowance/optional claimer in early March to begin her current win streak and
successfully added a first stakes win to her resume when dominating the Santa
Paula S. (G3) by 4 1/4 lengths on the Pro-Ride, once again in the same month.
Bred by Kristine L. Mitchell in Florida, Tanda was produced by the unraced
Dr. Caton mare Doc's Stormy Girl, making her a half-sister to stakes winner
Leigh McLovin (Flame Thrower), a yearling filly named Royal Stimulus (Repent)
and a 2010 filly by Van Nistelrooy. She hails from the family of Countus In
(Dancing Count), queen of the 1990 Matriarch S. (G1).
