Tattersalls July starts Tuesday

Last updated: 7/10/06 8:26 PM

Tattersalls' largest-ever July Sale, offering an 870-lot mixed catalog,

begins in Newmarket Tuesday. The first session is dominated by fillies and

mares, with many of the major breeding operations, including Juddmonte, Darley,

Shadwell and Gainsborough, sending surplus stock to Tattersalls.

Lot No. 199, Mermaid Island (Mujadil), has a couple of extra selling points.

Bought for 110,000 by agent John McGrath at Goffs February, she is now a

half-sister to a classic winner after her sister, Nightime (Galileo [Ire]), won

the Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-G1). The four-year-old filly was covered by

Galileo (Ire) in April. Mermaid Island is offered through Bill Dwan's

Castlebridge Consignment agency, as is Lot 198, Eyeq (Cadeaux Genereux [GB]), a

Scandinavian champion who is carrying a foal from the first crop by Oratorio

(Ire).

There are also two mares from the first book sent to 2005 Epsom Derby

(Eng-G1) winner Motivator in the catalog, including Lot 23, Park Romance (Dr

Fong). Consigned by Stephen and Louise Kemble's Elms Stud, Con Wilson's

four-year-old picked up black-type when third in the Sweet Solera S. (Eng-G3) at

Newmarket. Lot 24, Drifa (Hamas [Ire]), is the 10-year-old dam of 2005 Derby

Italiano (Ity-G1) winner De Sica (Sri Pekan), and she had a pedigree update

Sunday when her two-year-old Depp (City On A Hill) was an impressive listed

winner at San Siro. Drifa is offered on a Dr Fong cover.

Notable horses in training include Lot 567, BAAN (Diesis [GB]), who was

placed in the Derby Trial (Eng-G3) at Lingfield and Classic Trial (Eng-G3) at

Sandown this year. A strong draft from trainer Jim Bolger includes Lot 628,

ZACHAROVA (Lil's Boy), a three-time winner this year; and Lot 629, RHYTHM'N

ROOTS (Daggers Drawn), successful in this season's Ballysax S. (Ire-G3).

Lot 447, APEIRON (Devil River Peek), is a German Group 3 winner, while

five-year-old CAIRDEAS (Darshaan), Lot 659, is a Group 3-winning half-brother to

Desert King.

Five two-year-olds are offered from Mark Wallace's Sefton Lodge Stables; all

had been knocked down to Birchwood Stud as yearlings at Tattersalls. They

include Lot 265, a Montjeu (Ire) half-sister to top sprinter Benbaun

(Stravinsky) who cost 200,000 guineas in October.

"It isn't just the largest ever Tattersalls July catalog, but we also firmly

believe it to be the best," Tattersalls Marketing Director Jimmy George said

Monday. "There is serious strength in depth among the breeding stock as well as

the horses and fillies in training. There are also some eye-catching

two-year-olds."

The sale continues with sessions on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. For the

complete catalog, go to www.tattersalls.com/cat/july/july2006.pdf.
