Ted and Judy Nichols' homebred Teddy's Promise justified 8-5 favoritism in

Saturday's $100,250

L.A.

Woman Stakes at Santa Anita, the local prep for the November 2 Breeders' Cup

Filly & Mare Sprint.

"Uh huh -- she's going to the Breeders' Cup," Ted Nichols beamed.

Given a holiday following her runner-up effort in the July 13 A Gleam

Handicap at Hollywood, the Ron Ellis mare chased the pace set by Socialbug

through an opening quarter in :22 1/5. Then regular rider Victor Espinoza

allowed Teddy's Promise to move up on the turn, and she already began to stamp

her authority at the half-mile mark in :45.

The stretch run was a formality, as Teddy's Promise kept rolling through six

furlongs in 1:08 4/5 and completed 6 1/2 furlongs on the fast main track in 1:15

1/5. The winning margin was a comfortable two lengths from Great Hot.

"It was nice and easy today," Espinoza said. "I didn't want to push or

anything since the race is less than a month away. I want to win but I don't

want to hurt her -- she's a filly, so she's more sensitive. Everything worked

out well and it was a good race."

Nichols also noted the ease of her victory.

"It was easy -- she won by two, at least two lengths. She ran just fine. She

hasn't raced for a little while so we freshened her up and she came back

running."

"That (being drawn on the outside) helps her a lot," Ellis noted, "but the

freshening has really helped her a lot. She's really turned the corner mentally

and decided to work with us instead of against us.

"She's always been a tough filly to train, but since this little break, she's

been great. She's been working stronger. I thought she ran one of her best races

today and I thought she would coming in. That's the kindest she's ever gone to

the gate and the kindest that she's ever gone the first part of the race."

Teddy's Promise was only eighth in last year's Filly & Mare Sprint, but her

better attitude could yield a much better performance this time.

Great Hot also has the Breeders' Cup on her agenda, but trainer A.C. Avila

indicated that she's aiming for the Mile on turf versus males.

"We want to go in to the Breeders' Cup Mile, but we will wait and see how she

comes out of this," Avila said. "After that she will be going to the Keeneland

November sales. I don' know if she will sell or not, but that's where she will

be."

Great Hot finished 3 1/4 lengths clear of third-placer Sister Kate.

Executiveprivilege, last early, got up for fourth, trailed by Socialbug and

Conkate. Ismene was withdrawn.

Teddy's Promise's sixth career stakes score improved her record to 26-10-4-2,

$822,397. The Salt Lake mare earned her signature win in the 2011 La Brea. Last

year, she added the Time to Leave and Kalookan Queen, and her 2013 campaign

started off with a convincing victory in the January 26 Santa Monica. After a

close second in the March 10 Las Flores, Teddy's Promise successfully defended

her Time to Leave title by 4 1/4 lengths on May 5. The five-year-old was

subsequently a troubled third in the June 16 Desert Stormer Handicap and best of

the rest behind Book Review in the A Gleam.
