Texas Red works one mile between races at Santa Anita
|
Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Texas Red (Afleet Alex) took to the track after Santa Anita's 4TH race on Sunday to gear up for his return in the July 4 Dwyer (G2) at Belmont. Piloted by Hall of Famer Kent Desormeaux for his trainer brother, Keith, Texas Red worked one mile in company in 1:38 4/5. Stablemate Salty Kid (Kiss the Kid), under jockey Fernando Perez, served as the lead horse. Texas Red settled into rhythm well behind early, but readily gained ground on his target rounding the far turn. He blew past his company and opened up down the lane, striding out beautifully while in hand, and continued in good order on the gallop-out. Texas Red posted fractions of :25 1/5, :50 1/5, 1:15 1/5 and 1:27 3/5. In light of that seven-furlong time, he motored his final furlong in :11 1/5. Last seen missing by a neck in the February 1 San Vicente (G2), Texas Red was knocked off the Triple Crown trail by a foot abscess. Earlier Sunday, during morning training hours, Triple Crown king American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) was back on the track again at Santa Anita.

"He jogged today," trainer Bob Baffert said. "The weather is still pretty hot,
but he'll probably start galloping tomorrow. He'll parade here Saturday, but he
won't breeze."
Also, under regular rider Martin Garcia, a pared-down version of Santa
Anita Derby (G1) winner Dortmund (Big Brown) worked four furlongs in company Sunday in
:47 2/5,
while stablemate Gimme Da Lute (Midnight Lute), winner of the Affirmed (G3) on June
7, was clocked in :47.
"He went nice. He went an easy half," Baffert said of Dortmund, who has not
raced since finishing fourth in the Preakness (G1) on May 16.
"We're slowly keeping
him fit, but he still has a ways to go. He lost a lot of weight but he's slowly
getting it back."
