Dual Grade 3 hero THE PAMPLEMOUSSE (Kafwain) has been retired and

will take up stud duties in 2011 at Tom and Nancy Clark's Rancho San

Miguel near San Miguel, California. His fee has been set at $3,500.

The gray colt was a major contender on the 2009 Triple Crown trail,

breaking his maiden at Hollywood Park in December 2008 before adding

consecutive victories in the San Rafael S. (G3) and Sham S. (G3) in the

new year. In the latter race, the Julio Canani trainee romped by six

lengths, firmly securing his spot on many lists for the Kentucky Derby

(G1).

The Pamplemousse was installed as the morning-line favorite for the

Santa Anita Derby (G1), but was withdrawn the day of the race after heat

was discovered in one of his tendons during a pre-race examination. The

following day, it was revealed that a scan had found a small lesion on

the colt's left front leg and he was ruled out of the Kentucky Derby.

"The Pamplemousse had more raw ability than any horse I ever trained," Canani

said. "Not only was he fast, but he could carry his speed a long way. I really

believed he had classic potential. It was a travesty that he never had a chance

to prove it."

The now four-year-old colt didn't resurface until August 1, when he worked

three furlongs at Del Mar in :36 4/5. Eleven more works followed that one, with

the most recent coming on October 24 at Hollywood Park when The Pamplemousse

drilled five-eighths in :59 3/5. His return to the races was cut short, however,

by news of his retirement.

Out of the Rubiano mare Comfort Zone, The Pamplemousse's second dam is So

Cozy (Lyphard), from whom is descended the likes of Grade 1 scorer Stormello

(Stormy Atlantic) and Group 2 victor All Bar One (Hennessy). So Cozy is herself

a daughter of Grade 2 queen Special Warmth (Lucky Mike), who is the granddam of

four-time Grade 1-winning sire Marlin (Sword Dance [Ire]).
