The Very One

Last updated: 3/6/05 7:56 PM

Trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez teamed up for the win once

again on Sunday when Glencrest Farm LLC's HONEY RYDER (Lasting Approval) caught

Briviesca (GB) (Peintre Celebre) at the wire of

The Very One H. (G3) at

Gulfstream Park. Sent off at nearly 4-1, the gray filly saved ground for much of

the 1 3/8-mile grassy affair while Galloping Gal (Victory Gallop) carved out

fair fractions of :24 1/5, :47 3/5, 1:12 3/5 and 1:36 1/5 before going a fast 10

furlongs in 1:59 4/5. Velazquez angled the four-year-old outside of the

leaders entering the stretch, two lengths back in fourth, but accelerated

through the lane to catch Jerry Bailey and Briviesca by a neck, stopping the

clock in 2:11 3/5 for the firm turf test.

The winner returned $9.60, $4.80 and $3.80 on top of $1 exotics worth $28.10

for the exacta, $253.90 for the trifecta and $862.80 for the superfecta

(2-13-1-3). Briviesca gave back $5.40 and $4.80 at almost 5-1, 1 3/4-lengths

clear of third-place finisher Vous (Wild Rush), who paid $5.80 for the show.

High Court (Brz) (Blush Rambler) completed the super and was followed by

Galloping Gal, Savedbythelight (Saint Ballado), Royal Sweetpea (Favorite Trick),

Binya (Ger) (Royal Solo [Ire]), Noble Stella (Ger) (Monsun) and Skip Command

(Skip Away). Krasnaya (Red Ransom), Old Fashion Girl (Arch) and Coquinerie (Sahm)

were withdrawn.

Honey Ryder was bred in Kentucky by Wimborne Farm Inc. Out of the Affirmed

mare Cuando Quiere, she is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Cuando (Lord

at War [Arg]) and an unnamed yearling colt by War Chant as well as a full sister

to a two-year-old colt named Gray Mountain. She improves her mark to 15-4-1-6

with earnings of $209,830. This is the gray miss' first graded win as her

previous best came when taking the Princess Mora S. at Calder last year.
