Turfway Breeders' Cup
Casa De Caballos' BEAUTIFUL BETS (Alphabet Soup) ranged up on the outside
turning for home and closed strongly to annex the $128,500
S. (G3) by a neck on Saturday. Trained by Glenn Wismer, the six-year-old gray
rated patiently in midpack through the early stages under Willie Martinez before
putting in her winning run, finishing off the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42 3/5. The mare
was disregarded at 15-1 odds and rewarded her backers with mutuels of $33.20,
$11.40 and $5.80, while topping the healthy exotics of $196 (exacta), $1647.20
(trifecta) and $2391.80 ($1 superfecta).
La Reason (Labeeb [GB]) was content to race well off the pace early but
closed very well to garner the place, worth $4.80 and $3.40 at 4-1. Pacesetter
Slew Peg (Fusaichi Pegasus) stayed on gamely in the stretch but could not match
strides with the top pair late, paying $4.60 for the show at 6-1. Splendid
Blended (Unbridled's Song), the 7-5 choice in the large field, had no answer
late and finished off the superfecta while 5 1/2 lengths farther back.
Sister Star (Langfuhr) was next and followed by Prospective Saint (Saint
Ballado), Victoire Bataille (Military), Darluna (Premiership), Pentelicus Dance
(Ecu)
(Pentelicus) and Tappin For Gold (Pleasant Tap). Stop a Train (Devil His Due),
Island Escape (Petionville) and Soul Search (A.P. Indy) were withdrawn.
Beautiful Bets earned her second career stakes win in this one, first of
which was graded, and upped her career line to 44-7-8-9, $365,412. Among her nine black-type top three
finishes, the hard-trying mare has placed in the Shirley Jones Breeders' Cup H. (G2), Hurricane
Bertie H. (G3) and Seaway S. (Can-G3).
Bred in the Bluegrass State by Tri County Stables, the winner fetched a bid
of $22,000 at the 2002 OBS June Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale. She was produced
from the El Prado (Ire) mare Summerfest and counts an unnamed yearling filly by
Citidancer as a half-sister.
