Turfway outrider pony euthanized
A Turfway Park outrider pony infected with Equine Herpesvirus 1 was
euthanized on Sunday after the virus showed rapid progress and the horse's
condition continued to deteriorate. Six other horses stabled in the Outrider's
Barn remain quarantined and under observation, though no clinical evidence of
disease has been detected.
Forty horses in Barn 26, where the virus was first observed, were allowed
restricted access to the track for exercise on Tuesday and more test samples
were scheduled to be taken Wednesday evening after live racing had been
concluded.
A total of three horses at Turfway, including the outrider pony, have been
confirmed as having the infection. Two of those three were euthanized and
the remaining horse continues to recover.
