Twenty-three remain in Arc

Last updated: 9/30/08 7:12 PM

Unbeaten dual classic heroine ZARKAVA (Zamindar)

and five-time Group 1 winner DUKE OF MARMALADE (Danehill) head the list of 23 entries

left in Tuesday's first forfeit stage for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-G1) at Longchamp

on Sunday. Ballydoyle and trainer Aidan O'Brien are responsible for seven

remaining entrants, including Coronation Cup

(Eng-G1) victor SOLDIER OF FORTUNE (Galileo [Ire]), who finished fifth in last

year's Arc.

"The plan remains the same -- Soldier of Fortune and Duke of Marmalade

are being aimed at the Arc," O'Brien told Racing Post. "We entered Duke of

Marmalade for (a race at) Dundalk (on Friday) just in case the ground comes up soft

at Longchamp later in the week."

Carrying a record purse of 4 million, the

world's richest turf race is also the target of last year's runner-up YOUMZAIN (Sinndar) as well as Japan's

MEISHO SAMSON (Opera House [GB]). Other probable runners include unbeaten Prix du Jockey Club

(Fr-G1) hero

VISION D'ETAT (Chichicastenang) and King George VI & Queen

Elizabeth S. (Eng-G1) runner-up PAPAL BULL (Montjeu [Ire]).

Zarkava allayed fears she may repeat the

slow exit which tempered victory in the September 14 Prix Vermeille (Fr-G1) -- over the Arc

course and distance last out -- when working in company with two stablemates

on Tuesday. The Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (Fr-G1) and Prix de Diane (Fr-G1) victress was accompanied by

Group 3 winner Shemima (Dalakhani) and Sindajan (Medicean) in the one-mile exercise at

the Les Aigles gallops. Her connections were

pleased by the start of her workout and the manner in which she finished several

lengths clear of her colleagues.

"She didn't have a hard race in the Vermeille

and is doing very well, so I am very confident ahead of Sunday," trainer

Alain de Royer-Dupre said. "Soft ground wouldn't bother me, but it would if it turned

very heavy. It is forecast to be good ground at the moment."

Juddmonte Farms' ZAMBEZI SUN (Dansili [GB]), a half-length winner of the Prix Foy

(Fr-G2) on September 14, is another with recent workout

form on Monday. The Pascal Bary trainee sported first-time blinkers for the move

and was accompanied by two companions, and Zambezi Sun satisfied onlookers by

pulling several lengths clear at the end of his piece.

"The plan is still to run in the Arc," Bary said. "He tends to idle at times, which he did in the Foy, so

that is why we fitted him with blinkers. We wouldn't want it soft as he's a

fast-ground horse, so we'll just make sure we are satisfied with conditions and

will wait until the last minute before making a decision."

Unbeaten Vision d'Etat,

who succeeded on Arc Trials weekend with victory in the Prix Niel (Fr-G2) last

out, enjoyed a final blowout at trainer Eric Libaud's private gallop. Working

in the company of two others, he enjoyed a sedate spin over a mile on dirt.

"It was an easy piece of work just to maintain his condition," Libaud said. "It

wasn't to prove anything and it wasn't a test. It's not that he needs it heavy,

but I would welcome some rain, because if it was on the soft side it would be a

plus for him."

Epsom Oaks (Eng-G1) heroine LOOK HERE (Hernando [Fr]),

who ran a gutsy third in the St Leger (Eng-G1) at Doncaster on September 13, has

emerged as a surprise possible entrant for Sunday's feature, but requires a 100,000

supplement before making the line up. Originally slated to contest the Prix

de l'Opera (Fr-G1) on the Arc undercard, she will be partnered by Richard

Hughes -- who has lost the ride on Youmzain to Richard Hills -- if she makes the main

event.

"Look Here is likely to run at the weekend, and although she is still a

possible for the Prix de l'Opera, we are considering supplementing her on

Thursday morning for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe," trainer Ralph Beckett told

PA Sport. "We have booked Richard Hughes as he has ridden an Oaks Trial winner

for her owner and has considerable experience of Longchamp."
