An Unbridled's Song colt out of champion Riboletta (Brz) (Roi Normand) commanded

a winning bid of $1,050,000 from John Ferguson to top Monday evening's opening

session of the Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Sale at the Humphrey S. Finney

Pavilion in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Cataloged as Hip No. 86, the chestnut hails from the consignment of Taylor

Made Sales Agency, agent. He is the third registered foal from millionaire

Riboletta, who captured the Beldame S. (G1), Santa Margarita Invitational H.

(G1), Vanity H. (G1), Ruffian H. (G1), Milady Breeders' Cup H. (G1), Clement L.

Hirsch H. (G2) and Hawthorne H. (G2) in 2000 en route to garnering the Eclipse

Award as champion older mare. Prior to coming to the United States, she was a

Group 1 heroine in her native Brazil. Riboletta is a full sister to Super Power

(Brz), Brazil's Horse of the Year in 1999, as well as stakes victress Tamara

Princess (Brz).

A Distorted Humor colt ranked as the second most expensive when going to B.

Wayne Hughes for $875,000. Touring the ring as Hip 82, the chestnut colt was

offered by Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services, Inc. (J. Stuart), agent for Mueller

Farms, Inc. He was produced by Grade 3 winner and Grade 1-placed Queen of Money

(Corporate Report), making him a half-brother to multiple Canadian stakes hero

Quiet Cash (Real Quiet) and stakes queen Pocketfullofpesos (In Excess [Ire]).

Ferguson snapped up the next highest-priced colts, who brought $800,000

apiece. Hip 30, a chestnut colt by Distorted Humor, was consigned by Derry

Meeting Farm, agent. The Pennsylvania-bred is out of the unraced Storm Bird mare

Just a Bird, who is herself a half-sister to Grade 3 victress Recording (Danzig)

and current multiple stakes winner Smart Growth (Gone West). The yearling's

second dam is Grade 2 queen Ratings (Caveat).

Shortly afterward, Ferguson likewise went to $800,000 to secure a bay colt by

Vindication, sporting Hip 38. Offered by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, the

youngster was produced by the unraced Life's a Dance (Gone West), a half-sister

to stakes winner Paiota Falls (Kris S.). She is out of Dance Swiftly (Danzig),

an unraced full sister to Hall of Famer Dance Smartly, Canadian Horse of the

Year as well as the Eclipse Award winner as champion three-year-old filly in

1991. This is the black type-rich family of champion Sky Classic (Nijinsky II)

and Grade 1 hero Smart Strike (Mr. Prospector), both successful sires.

Taylor Made also consigned the top-selling filly, Hip 99, a lass from the

first crop of champion Speightstown (Gone West), who was purchased by Zayat

Stables for $425,000. The dark bay is the second foal from multiple stakes

winner Seven Four Seven (Colonial Affair).

On Monday, 76 horses were sold for a total of $19,867,000, an increase of 5.7

percent from the $18,790,000 realized by just 60 yearlings at last year's

opening session. Correspondingly, the average dropped 16.5 percent, from

$313,167 to $261,408. The median also fell from $255,000 to $207,500, an

18.6-percent decline from a year ago.

The sale concludes Tuesday evening, with Hip 109 kicking off the session at 7

p.m. (EDT). For more information, please visit fasigtipton.com.
