Union Place holds on in Ft. Lauderdale
William A. Sorokolit's homebred UNION PLACE (Out of Place) took the lead turning for home and fought gamely to the wire in taking the $60,000 Lauderdale S. at Gulfstream by a neck. Ridden by Javier Castellano, the six-year-old was always prominent from his widest post, passed the tiring pacesetters at the head of the stretch, and held off a furious charge from Freefourinternet (Tabasco Cat) to annex his score. The Randy Schulhofer-trained bay finished up 1 1/16 miles on the firm sod in 1:38 1/5, and paid out $21.80, $9.80 and $5.80 at odds of 9-1. Freefourinternet could see the entire field at the six furlong mark but closed mightily to gain the place, paying $10 and $5.80 while completing the $105.60 exacta ($1) at 9-1. Stormy Roman (Future Storm) was just another neck back in third, worth $11.40 while rounding out the $1,485.30 trifecta ($1) at 24-1. Scooter Roach (Mi Cielo) was fourth another half-length back and on the bottom of the $10,922.10 superfecta (14-9-11-4) ($1) at 6-1. Keep Cool (Frosty The Snowman) was next and followed by 6-5 choice Timo (El Prado [Ire]), Marco's Word (Marco Bay), Broadway View (Broad Brush), Prince Prado (El Prado [Ire]), Hotstufanthensome (Awesome Again), Hear No Evil (Carson City) and Final Prophecy (World Stage [Ire]). Tap Day (Pleasant Tap) and Twilight Road (Cahill Road) were scratched.

Also at Gulfstream, William and Vicki Poston's ANGELA'S LOVE (Not For Love) was allowed a clear early lead and never stopped in taking the $60,000 River S. by 2 1/2 lengths. Making just her second turf outing, the five-year-old mare was unopposed through fractions of :23 4/5, :47 4/5, 1:11 1/5 and 1:33 3/5, before completing the 1 1/16-mile firm turf race in 1:39 1/5 beneath Kieren Fallon. Conditioned by Dale Romans, the dark bay gave back $16.20, $7.80 and $5.60 while keying a $44.50 exacta ($1), $139 trifecta ($1) and $884 superfecta (10-8-1-2) ($1) at 7-1. Delta Princess (A.P. Indy) made a big closing move from near the back of the pack, but could do no better than second, a half-length clear of third. The mare gave back $5 and $3.40 at 4-1. Snowdrops (GB) (Gulch) was shuffled back at the three-quarters pole, but closed admirably to gain third as the 2-1 choice. Show was worth $3.40.Galloping Gal (Victory Gallop) completed the superfecta at 6-1, and was trailed by Ocean Silk (Dynaformer), Marwood (Marlin), Mystery Itself (Pulpit), Dakota Light (Colony Light), Jacqui's Promise (Loup Sauvage), Jennaslilprincess (Waquoit), Something Ventured (Cobra King) and Hopelessly Devoted (Storm Creek).
