Winslow Homer sidelined by condylar fracture

Last updated: 8/2/10 4:08 PM

Fox Hill Farm's WINSLOW HOMER (Unbridled's Song), who propelled himself into

the picture for the August 28 Travers S. (G1) with a nine-length romp in

Sunday's Curlin S. at Saratoga, exited the race with a condylar fracture of his

left foreleg that will force him to miss the rest of the year.

According to trainer Tony Dutrow, the gray colt will probably have a screw

inserted to stabilize the fracture and could return to racing next year.

"We're anticipating he'll come back," Dutrow said. "It's a pretty simple

procedure."

Winslow Homer's hopes of cutting a swathe in the three-year-old division were

dashed for the second time this year. His victory in the January 23 Holy Bull S.

(G3) briefly put him on the Triple Crown trail, until he was diagnosed with a

stress fracture in a cannon bone shortly thereafter.

Sidelined for five months, Winslow Homer reappeared with a third-place effort

in the June 26 Iowa Derby (G3). He moved forward off that comeback in the Curlin,

where he wired the field in a dominating performance.

Winslow Homer, a $310,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, sports a

6-4-0-2 mark with $222,825 in earnings.
