Lawrence Goichman's homebred J'RAY (Distant View) confronted pacesetter
Bayou's Lassie (Outflanker) in midstretch and inched away from that rival to
post a three-quarters of a length win in the $100,000
My Charmer H. (G3)
at
Calder on Saturday. Trained by Todd Pletcher and piloted by Manoel Cruz, the
chestnut miss settled early before putting in her run four-wide approaching
the final turn and wearing down the game leader, stopping the teletimer in 1:48
4/5 for the 1 1/8-mile firm turf affair. The 7-2 second choice was worth $9.20,
$4.40 and $3.60 while keying the exotics: $47 exacta, $330.40 trifecta and
$1,713.20 superfecta (11-8-4-9).
Bayou's Lassie was clear early and established splits of :24, :48 4/5, 1:13
and 1:37 1/5 for the opening mile and finished 2 1/4 lengths clear of her
nearest foe in second. The 5-2 favorite paid $4 and $3.60. Redaspen (Bianconi)
steadied early but recovered to gain the third spot by a neck on the inside. The
nearly 12-1 shot gave back $5.60. Fantastic Shirl (Fantastic Light) loomed a
threat entering the lane but lacked the necessary late punch to challenge the
top pair, ultimately finishing off the superfecta as the 5-1 fourth choice. It
was another neck back to Beautiful Daniele (A.P. Indy), who was a neck in front
of La Dolce Vita (Quiet American). Annabill (Outflanker), Cozzi Capital (Cozzene)
and Shapira (Chi) (Hussonet) completed the order of finish. Gadolinium (Greenwood Lake) and Ms. Lydonia (Labeeb
[GB]) were withdrawn.

The winner notched her sixth career stakes win in improving her lifetime line
to 16-7-4-1, $507,689. The classy four-year-old captured the Bayou Breeders' Cup
H. (G3) in the spring, and also boasts tallies in the Selima S., Jessamine S.,
Tropical Park Oaks and Marie G. Krantz Memorial H. She's placed in three
graded events.
"She loves Florida and has done very well here (two wins and a second in
three stakes starts at Calder)," Goichman said. "She's the best I've ever bred."
J'ray is out of the winning Bubbling Heights (Fr) (Darshaan), who is a close
relative of 1993 Horse of the Year Kotashaan (Fr) (Darshaan), and has an unraced
three-year-old half-sister named The Ag (Bahri), as well as an unnamed
two-year-old half-brother by Street Cry (Ire). This is also the family of 2004
Appleton H. (G3) winner and Manhattan H. (G1) runner-up Millennium Dragon (GB)
(Mark of Esteem [Ire]).
