Tres Borrachos rides the rail to upset in Swaps Trainer Beau Greely et al's TRES BORRACHOS (Ecton Park) rallied through a big opening along the rail and held off Two Step Salsa (Petionville) and Colonel John (Tiznow) to the wire in pulling off an upset in the $355,495 Swaps S. (G2) over Hollywood's Cushion Track on Saturday. The bay gelding, who went postward as the 11-1 longshot in the four-horse field, returned $24 and $5.80 while keying the $59.60 exacta and $83.60 trifecta (1-2-4). The final time for nine furlongs under Tyler Baze was 1:49 1/5. Tres Borrachos broke best and led for the opening few jumps before allowing Two Step Salsa to lead the way well off the rail, through fractions of :23 2/5, :47 and 1:10 4/5, with Colonel John in close attendance on his outside. Approaching the final turn, Colonel John confronted the pacesetter, but the duo were outmoved by Tres Borrachos, who was guided deftly along the rail by Baze. The new leader never got away from the two betting choices, but they couldn't gain any ground inside the final furlong of the race. The margin on the wire was 1 1/4 lengths. Two Step Salsa stayed on gamely to earn the place spot by a head, worth $3.20. Colonel John was 4 3/4 lengths clear of Madeo (Mizzen Mast), who brought up the rear. Nownownow (Whywhywhy) and Trevor's Clever (Stephen Got Even) were withdrawn. The Kentucky-bred winner is out of the stakes-winning Pete's Fancy (Peteski) and has an unraced two-year-old half-sister named Fancy Vintage (Hennessy), as well as an unnamed 2008 half-brother by War Front. Tres Borrachos, who was purchased for the bargain price of $7,000 at the 2006 Fasig-Tipton October Yearling sale, improved his lifetime line to 10-2-1-3, $398,270. He was third in both the El Camino Real Derby (G3) and Arkansas Derby (G2), and entered this one off a second-place showing in the Affirmed H. (G2). Tres Borrachos hails from the same family as the legendary mare Makybe Diva (Desert King), a two-time Australian Horse of the Year who captured the Melbourne Cup (Aus-G1) in three consecutive years from 2003-05.
