Magical Forest fights back in Barbaro Paraneck Stable's MAGICAL FOREST (Forest Camp) was headed by 6-5 favorite Cherokee Artist (Cherokee Run) in early stretch and rallied back to hold that one off and post a half-length win in the $300,000 Barbaro S. (G3) at Delaware Park on Sunday. Trained by Joseph DeMola, the sophomore colt captured the Floor Show S. in preparation of this one, but was still sent postward as the near 16-1 longshot in the five-horse field under Jorge Chavez. The dark bay took over soon after the start and led through splits of :24, :48 3/5 and 1:12 3/5 for the opening six panels, with Cherokee Artist nearly glued to his flank. Turning for home, the pacesetter was headed but would gain the advantage right back and not relinquish it to the wire. The final time for 1 1/16 miles was 1:44, and the winner paid $33.60, $7.40 and $3.40. Cherokee Artist ran a big one in defeat but could not seal the deal late, completing the $102.40 exacta while paying $2.80 and $2.10. Ready Set (Touch Gold) was last after six panels but rallied steadily on the outside and nearly caught the dueling leaders, finishing just a head shy of the place spot. The 5-1 fourth choice was worth $3 and finished off the $371.80 trifecta. Goldsville (Successful Appeal) was next and was followed by 2-1 second choice Roman Emperor (Empire Maker). Z Humor (Distorted Humor) was withdrawn after running in Saturday's Long Branch S. at Monmouth Park. Magical Forest has now won three of his four two-turn races, improving his overall mark to 13-4-2-1, $315,599. After breaking his maiden in his seventh start, the Kentucky-bred scored a 13-1 upset of the Spicy Award S. at Aqueduct in his next start . He was bred by Gulf Coast Farms Bloodstock and attracted a bid of $360,000 at the 2006 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga August Yearling sale. Produced from the stakes-winning mare Silken Magic (Naevus), Magical Forest has an unraced two-year-old half-brother named Kafrun (Kafwain) and an unnamed 2008 half-sister by Successful Appeal.
