Evita Argentina scores in Sorrento

Halo Farms and Three Sisters Thoroughbred's EVITA ARGENTINA (Candy Ride [Arg]) rallied in the stretch of Wednesday's $150,000 Sorrento S. (G3) at Del Mar and just got past Stardom Bound (Tapit) to post a length victory on the line. With Tyler Baze aboard, the John Sadler-trained lass finished the 6 1/2-furlong Polytrack test in 1:17 2/5 to move her record to a perfect two-for-two with $118,800 in career earnings.

Cosmic Queen (Stormy Atlantic) was quickest from the gate, setting splits of :22 2/5 and :46 1/5 while Evita Argentina was settled in the second flight of runners. The eventual winner came four and five wide into the stretch, accelerated down the lane and drew off to pay $17.20, $6.40 and $3.60 as the 7-1 fourth pick. Stardom Bound put in a late bid nearing the wire, but couldn't get past the winner. The 9-5 favorite was worth $3.80 and $2.80 while ending the $34.90 exacta ($1).

Glitter City (City Place) was another head back in third but was disqualified and placed fourth for interference in the stretch. Emmy Darling (Graeme Hall) was a neck back in fourth at 2-1, but was promoted to third and gave back $2.80 while finishing the $100.70 trifecta ($1). Glitter City completed the $499.90 superfecta (8-6-2-7) ($1) and completing the order of finish were Malusita (Pure Prize), Dash Dot Dash (Put It Back), Silar Rules (Ten Most Wanted), Amina (Bertrando), Cosmic Queen and Trifecta King (Peace Rules). Upper Manhattan (Unbridled Time) was withdrawn.

Evita Argentina took her maiden debut by a length at Hollywood Park on June 25. Bred in Kentucky by Halo Farms, the juvenile chestnut is out of the winning Jealous Wildcat (Forest Wildcat), who has since produced two full sisters to the Sorrento winner, a yearling and a 2008 foal. Evita Argentina comes from the same family as Grade 1 hero and sire Trippi (End Sweep) as well as multiple Grade 2 winner Appealing Skier (Baldski).
