Edison breaks through in Nashua

Eli Gindi's BREAK WATER EDISON (Lemon Drop Kid) swept to the lead turning for home and powered clear to a 1 3/4-length score in the $118,500 Nashua S. (G3) at Aqueduct on Sunday. Trained by John Kimmel, the talented two-year-old broke well but was rated patiently by Alan Garcia while wide as Forty Thieves (Read the Footnotes) and Royal Vindication (Vindication) dueled through splits of :22 4/5 and :46 for the opening half-mile. As the field approached the final turn, Garcia put his mount in prime striking position in the four-path and the colt responded, quickly taking over in early stretch and edging clear to complete one-mile on the fast main oval in 1:35 4/5. The 6-1 fifth-choice was good for $15.40, $7.80 and $4.60 while topping the $57 exacta and $219.50 trifecta (6-2-4).

Break Water Edison impressed with a 4 3/4-length, front-running victory in his debut and followed that with a huge second in the Saratoga Special S. (G2). The $525,000 OBS March two-year-old purchase finished a useful fourth in the subsequent Hopeful S. (G1) and never factored while eighth in the Champagne S. (G1) most recently. His career line now rests at 5-2-1-0, $146,400.

"Well, that was more like it," Kimmel said. "In his last race (Champagne), I told the jockey to take him back. He took dirt in his face for six furlongs and got very discouraged. I think today was a very good performance. We will take him to Florida and bring him back for a three-year-old campaign."

Hello Broadway (Broken Vow) raced in traffic to the lane and finished with good energy to grab the place spot by a neck as the 2-1 favorite. The runner-up paid $4.10 and $2.90 in the process. Royal Vindication dispatched his pace pressure at the top of the lane and finished well to just miss second while giving back $3.30 for the show at 7-2. It was 5 1/4 lengths back to Friesan Fire (A.P. Indy), who was followed by Tire Kicker (More Than Ready), Prince Charming (Vindication) and Forty Thieves.

The winner was bred in Kentucky by Caldara Farm and is out of four-time stakes queen August Storm (Storm Creek). Break Water Edison has a yearling half-sister named Stormy Union (Dixie Union).
