Secret Gypsy scores in Endine

Richland Hills Stable and John Kuehl's SECRET GYPSY (Sea of Secrets) was boxed in at the rail for the first half of Saturday's $150,700 Endine S. (G3) at Delaware Park, was forced to check beneath jockey Jamie Theriot exiting the turn, but managed to get through in the stretch to post a one-length victory. The Ronny Werner-trained mare ran the six-furlong test in 1:10 1/5 on the fast main track, giving back $2.80, $2.20 and $2.10 as the 2-5 favorite.

All Giving (Allen's Prospect) led the field through opening splits of :22 2/5 and :45 3/5, with Life Lesson (Unbridled's Song) racing just off her flank. Secret Gypsy had settled in down on the rail with Mindy Sue (Pleasantly Perfect) keeping pace just to her outside. The eventual winner had plenty of run but nowhere to go rounding the turn, causing her to check, but managed to push her way through on the inside to take command entering the stretch and pull off the victory.

Dana Whitney, who rode Our Khrysty (Newfoundland), lodged a claim of foul after being forced to take up inside the winner in the turn, but it was disallowed by the stewards.

"The plan was to bring her back in the early stages to save some of her speed for the stretch run, but we were not expecting for her to have that kind of rough trip," Werner said. "And then we had the claim of foul to worry about. Fortunately, she overcame and once again proved how much of a warrior she is.

"It looks like our next stop will be the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint ([G1] at Churchill Downs on November 5)."

Ivory Empress (Seeking the Gold) rallied from last, split rivals in midstretch and took second by a half-length over Mindy Sue. The four-year-old was worth $13 and $6.40 as the 32-1 longest shot in the seven-horse field. Mindy Sue, sent off at 18-1, paid $5.40, and the exotics returned $47.80 (exacta), $280.20 (trifecta) and $1,231 (1-2-5-3 superfecta). Our Khrysty, Hour Glass (Petionville), Life Lesson and All Giving completed the order under the wire after Fortune Play (Five Star Day) was withdrawn.

Secret Gypsy completed a stakes hat track here following wins in the Honorable Miss H. (G2) at Saratoga and the Saylorville S. at Prairie Meadows in her prior two starts. She also boasts victories in the 2009 Distaff H. (G2) and 2008 Esplanade S. on her record, and owns four stakes placings, including the Winning Colors S. (G3) and Queen S. from this season. The Endine score boosted her earnings to $596,926 and improved her career line to 17-8-2-2.

Bred in Kentucky by Norman Cheng, the five-year-old mare is the first registered foal out of the unraced Miss Utada (Rahy) and sold to Richland Hills for $10,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Preferred two-year-old in training. She counts an unnamed yearling filly by Van Nistelrooy and a 2010 Tale of the Cat colt as half-siblings.

Secret Gypsy's fourth dam, Possessive (GB) (Posse), is noted for producing 1991 Irish Oaks (Ire-G1) and Italian Oaks (Ity-G1) queen Possessive Dancer (GB) (Shareef Dancer). This is the same family as Irish One Thousand Guineas heroines Front Row (*Epaulette) and *Black Satin II (Linacre).
