Juddmonte Farms' homebred MIRABILIS (Lear Fan) tracked a moderate pace of :24
2/5, :48 4/5 and 1:12 3/5 before unleashing an impressive turn of foot to score
in Saturday's $115,100
Churchill Distaff Turf Mile S. (G3). With Pat Valenzuela in the irons, the
Bobby Frankel trainee finished one length clear in a final time of 1:35 4/5 for
the firm-turf mile. The four-year-old filly returned $12, $6 and $4.80 as the
third choice in the wagering at 5-1."She doesn't have a long, sustained run,"
Valenzuela said, "but for three-sixteenths of a mile, she has a quick
foot. I had a ton of confidence in her."
The 28-1 Special Grayce (Smart Strike), going seven wide off the turn,
erupted from the back to grab second by a neck, paying $13 and $7.60 while
completing the $238.80 exacta. More Than Promised (More Than Ready) gamely
closed along the hedge for third, yielding $6.40 at 12-1 and rounding out the
$1,767.20 trifecta. Another half-length back came the even-money favorite Wend
(Pulpit), who ran evenly in fourth. The 8-4-3-2 superfecta totaled $5,803.
Lock and Key (Ire) (Key of Luck) rallied from last after a troubled trip to
get fifth, followed by Marchonin (Dixieland Band), May Gator (Green Alligator),
the early pacesetter Sis City (Slew City Slew), Ready's Gal (More Than Ready)
and Dash of Humor (Distorted Humor). Anegada (Arch) was withdrawn.

By landing her first American stakes as well as her first at Group/Graded
level, Mirabilis advanced her mark to 14-4-2-4 with $260,369 in her account. In
her other two U.S. stakes attempts, Mirabilis finished third in the Buena Vista
H. (G2) and most recently the Jenny Wiley S. (G2). On Saturday, she turned the
tables on her Jenny Wiley conqueror Wend. Previously trained by Andre Fabre in
France, Mirabilis won the Prix d'Angerville and placed in the Prix de la Foret
(Fr-G1), Prix du Pin (Fr-G3) and Prix Miesque (Fr-G3).
The Kentucky-bred is out of Grade 2 winner Media Nox (GB) (Lycius), making
her a half-sister to 2003 Prix de Diane (Fr-G1) (French Oaks) and Prix du Moulin
de Longchamp
(Fr-G1) queen Nebraska Tornado (Storm Cat) as well as French Group 2 winner and Grade 3-placed Burning Sun (Danzig). Media Nox has since produced an
unraced juvenile colt named Vespucci (Forest Wildcat), an unnamed yearling filly
by Storm Cat and a 2006 colt by Giant's Causeway.
