In a four-horse field that was expected to be a two-horse race, Jay Em Ess
Stable's ARSON SQUAD (Brahms) was able to pass the two favorites in the latter
stages to emerge victorious in Saturday's $354,515
Swaps
Breeders' Cup S. (G2) at Hollywood Park. Jockey Alex Solis was content to
let the dark bay sit back as A. P. Warrior (A.P. Indy) led Point Determined
(Point Given) through splits of :23 1/5, :46 and 1:09 4/5. The latter took the
advantage briefly as the leaders entered the stretch, but lost command as Arson
Squad passed the two on the outside.
For a moment, it looked as if Point Determined would rally, but Arson Squad
would have none of it as he cruised to the wire the winner by a length,
completing the 1 1/8-mile contest in 1:48 2/5 on the fast dirt. Sent off at 2-1,
the Bruce Headley trainee returned $6.80 and $3 to his bettors while leading the
$6.70 exacta ($1).
Point Determined gave back $2.40 for second as the even-money favorite. A. P. Warrior
and Potential (General Royal) completed the order of finish.
Bred in Pennsylvania by E&D Enterprises, Arson Squad is out of the Green
Dancer mare Majestic Fire. This was Arson Squad's third win in six attempts
(6-3-0-3) and he boosts his earnings to $330,450. Earlier this year, the
three-year-old captured the San Pedro S. and came home third in his last two
outings, the Affirmed H. (G3) and Lazaro Barrera Memorial S. (G2).
