James T. Scatuorchio's SCAT DADDY (Johannesburg) was content to track in
third during Thursday's $147,000
Sanford S. (G2) at Saratoga before beginning
his run and overtaking the pacesetting Teuflesberg (Johannesburg) to win by a
neck. Freshman sire Johannesburg thus recorded not only his first stakes winner,
but he was also responsible for the exacta. Giving trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez yet another
Saratoga stakes victory, the dark bay Scat Daddy finished six furlongs on the fast
main track in 1:11.Scat Daddy broke on top, but was bumped and eventually settled into third
behind Teuflesberg, who set splits of :22 and :45 3/5 with War Wolf (Tale of the Cat)
pressing in second. As Teuflesberg reached the turn, though, Velasquez shook the
reins at Scat Daddy and the colt began to move. Swinging out from his
ground-saving rail trip, the eventual winner drew even with Teuflesberg late
before pulling ahead by a neck on the wire.
"The good news now is that he has got an educational trip under his
belt," Pletcher said. "He got dirt in his face and he was down inside
and he was a little green. It was impressive what he did the last 50 or
60 yards."

Sent off the 1-5 favorite in the five-horse field, Scat Daddy returned $2.60,
$2.10 and $2.10 while keying the $17.60 exacta and $34.80 trifecta (4-2-3).
Teuflesberg was easily best of the rest, 5 1/2 lengths clear of War Wolf to pay
$4.60 and $3 at 13-1, and War Wolf gave back $2.20 as the 7-2 second choice. Trip
to the Bank (Trippi) finished another 9 1/4 lengths back and was followed by
Bagger Vance (Langfuhr) in last.
Scat Daddy easily won his career debut at Belmont, winning a maiden special weight
event by 5 1/4 lengths, and has now earned $115,800 from two starts. The first stakes
winner out of the unraced Love Style (Mr. Prospector), Scat Daddy was bred by
Axel Wend in Kentucky and sold to his current connections as a $250,000
Keeneland September yearling. Love Style, who is out of Grade 1 winner Likeable
Style (Nijinsky II), has produced an unnamed 2006 full brother to the
Sanford winner.
Pletcher mentioned the September 5 Hopeful S. (G1) as a possible next start
for Scat Daddy.
