Attima back to her front-running best in San Clemente

Fanticola & Scardino's ATTIMA (GB) (Zafonic) pulled her way to the front at the start of Saturday's $150,000 San Clemente H. (G2) at Del Mar, and withstood challenges throughout to take the mile turf event by 1 1/4 lengths under Victor Espinoza. Trained by Julio Canani, the sophomore miss was rebounding off an unplaced effort in the American Oaks Invitational (G1) and finished the event in 1:34 3/5 on the firm turf.

Attima set splits of :22 2/5, :47, 1:11 and 1:23 1/5 as the even-money choice and paid $4.20, $3 and $2.40 to her faithful backers. It was a cavalry charge at the wire for the minor placings, with Sol Mi Fa (Ire) (Distant Music) getting second by a head and returning $4.80 and $3.40 at 5-1. Soothsay (Ire) (Mujadil) was worth $2.80 at 5-1 for holding Secret Scheme (Precocity) to fourth by a nose. Next under the line were Tasha's Delight (Afternoon Deelites), Lake Marina (Meadowlake), True and True (Is It True) and Arlene (Game Plan). Hill of Grace (GB) (Desert Prince [Ire]) and Musical High (Ire) (Mozart [Ire]) were withdrawn. The $1 exotics gave back $9.80 (exacta), $28.40 (trifecta) and $73.70 (9-3-5-6 superfecta).

Attima started her career in France, but never ran in a maiden. Instead, the bay lass made her debut in a Maisons-Laffitte allowance, finishing second, then captured her next race in another allowance at that track by two lengths. She made her stakes debut in the Prix de Cabourg (Fr-G3), running fifth, then was second in the Prix La Rochette (Fr-G3) before ending her 2005 season with an off-the-board finish in a Group 1.

The sophomore made her first 2006 appearance stateside, capturing a Hollywood Park allowance by 3 1/2 lengths in early May, then scored a pacesetting victory in the Honeymoon Breeders' Cup H. (G2) prior to her American Oaks run. With the winner's share from this one, Attima has now earned $252,676 to go along with her 9-4-2-0 career mark.

Bred in Great Britain by Chantilly Bloodstock Agency, Attima is out of the Eagle Eyed mare Guarded and has a juvenile half-brother named San Domenico (Zamindar).
