Spun Sugar all heart in Go For Wand

Stronach Stables' homebred SPUN SUGAR (Awesome Again) split horses at the head of the stretch and valiantly fought off the oncoming Balletto (UAE) (Timber Country) to the wire in taking the $250,000 Go For Wand H. (G1) at Saratoga on Sunday. Breaking alertly from her rail post beneath Michael Luzzi, Spun Sugar patiently rated on the rail as Pool Land (Silver Deputy) and Take D' Tour (Tour D'or) led the field in tandem through splits of :23 2/5, :46 2/5 and 1:10 2/5. As the field turned for home, Spun Sugar split the pacesetters but appeared beaten by the fast closing Balletto late, only to gamely hold on by the slimmest of margins in a gutsy effort. The final time for the nine furlongs over the fast surface was 1:49 4/5, and the winner rewarded her backers with mutuels of $13, $6.40 and $4.40 at 5-1.

Balletto was content to sit well off the pace in last for the opening six furlongs and then came home with excellent energy, narrowly settling for the place spot. The 11-1 shot paid $9.80 and $5.80 while completing the $101.50 exacta. Pool Land, another 6 1/2 lengths back, did quite well to keep third after dueling for much of the fray. The miss was worth $4.70 at 5-1 while completing the $601 trifecta. Second choice Take D' Tour was next and followed by Nothing But Fun (Dixie Union) and the disappointing 3-2 favorite Oonagh Maccool (Ire) (Giant's Causeway). Classy Charm (Silver Charm) and Summerly (Summer Squall) were withdrawn.

Spun Sugar runs her mark to 11-6-3-1 with earnings of $929,171 following the win. The consistent lass has captured the Apple Blossom H. (G1) and Black Eyed Susan S. (G2), with placings in the Mother Goose S. (G1), Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) and Alabama S. (G1).

The winner was bred in the Bluegrass State and produced from the multiple stakes winner Irish Cherry (Irish Open). Spun Sugar has an unraced two-year-old full-brother named Daaher, an unnamed yearling half-brother by Sky Mesa and a 2006 half-sister by Medaglia D'oro.
