Robert Manfuso's COURT FOLLY (Royal Academy) pulled a major upset on Monday when driving to a 1 1/2-length victory over heavy 1-5 favorite Songster (Songandaprayer) in the $142,500 Amsterdam S. (G2) at Saratoga.

The bay gelding was content to rate in last in the four-horse field under jockey Calvin Borel as El Nino (Storm Cat) and Noonmark (Unbridled's Song) dueled through a grueling opening quarter of :21 4/5 with Songster a half-length behind in third on the outside. The latter made a move going into the turn under Edgar Prado, getting the half-mile in :44 1/5, and looked the winner as he opened up a clear lead in the stretch, but the 123-pound highweight tired in the final furlong. Court Folly, toting 115 pounds, made his way past on the outside to complete the 6 1/2-furlong affair in 1:16.

"They set it up well today," trainer Ian Wilkes said. "I didn't know if we could beat Songster. He's phenomenal and Tom (Albertrani) has done a tremendous job with him. It came down to if we could beat Songster."

Wilkes said he would now point Court Folly toward the King's Bishop S. (G1) on August 26.

"(Songster) definitely kicked in, but he was beaten by a better horse today," Prado said of his trip aboard the favorite. "I thought we were home free, but the other horse ran a little faster today."

Sent off at 10-1, Court Folly returned $22 and $3.90. Songster gave back $2.10 while completing a $40.80 exacta (5-1). El Nino and Noonmark rounded out the order of finish. Songster's entrymate, Changing Weather (Storm Boot), and Saint Daimon (Saint Ballado) were scratched.

Bred in Kentucky by his owner and Carl Nafzger, Court Folly is out of the multiple stakes-placed mare Confidentially (Saratoga Six). He posted a third in the Swale S. (G2) earlier this year and finished a close second in the Matt Winn S. at Churchill Downs in May before running third in allowance company in his last start. The sophomore now shows a line of 11-3-2-3 with earnings of $196,927.
