Showing Up blitzes Secretariat foes

Showing Up did just that in the Secretariat, to his rivals' dismay (Benoit Photo)
Lael Stables' SHOWING UP (Strategic Mission) was sent to the front early beneath Cornelio Velasquez in the $400,000 Secretariat S. (G1) at Arlington on Saturday, and the race was virtually over from there. Sailing on the front through splits of :24 1/5, :47 4/5 and 1:11 for the opening six panels, the chestnut colt kicked into overdrive turning for home and quickly dispatched his rivals in completing the 1 1/4 miles in a scintillating 2:00 over the firm turf course. The final time was even more impressive taken into account that his elders ran more than one second slower in the Arlington Million (G1), two races prior. The classy sophomore left little doubt as to who is the best three-year-old grass runner on the East Coast, if not the entire United States, and gave back $3, $2.60 and $2.40 as the overwhelming 1-2 choice for conditioner Barclay Tagg.

"I was impressed with him," Tagg said. "He ran even better than I thought he would. I knew he'd run well, but I never expected this."

Ivan Denisovich (Ire) (Danehill) rated in midpack and made a visually impressive stretch run to make the final 1 1/2-length margin respectable, although the race was over by the time he got in gear. The Irish import paid $6 and $4.80 while completing the $19.40 exacta at 5-1. Primary (Giant's Causeway) moved into a threatening position turning for home but lost momentum in being passed by all but one, ultimately fighting back late to get the show spot 4 1/2 lengths farther back. The 9-1 shot was good for $4.40 while capping off the $99.40 trifecta. Proudinsky (Ger) (Silvano [Ger]) tired late in being beaten for the show, but sat on the bottom of the $217.40 superfecta (1-5-4-2) at 8-1. Niagara Causeway (Giant's Causeway) and 7-2 second-choice Go Between (Point Given) completed the order of finish.

Showing Up now sports an impressive mark of 6-5-0-0, with his lone loss coming in the Kentucky Derby (G1), and became racing's newest millionaire in the process with $1,080,500 in lifetime earnings. The colt has captured the Lexington S. (G2) as well as the Colonial Turf Cup S. in his effort prior to this one.

The winner was bred in the Bluegrass State by Nellie M. Cox and Rose Retreat Farm, and produced from the winning Miss Alethia (T. V. Commercial). He was preceded in stakes glory by his half-brother Gimmeawink (Elusive Quality), and counts an unnamed 2005 filly by Proud Citizen as a half-sister.
