Octave takes winning role in Adirondack Starlight Stables and Donald Lucarelli's OCTAVE (Unbridled's Song) caught pacesetter and 4-5 favorite Magical Ride (Storm Cat) in deep stretch and withstood the late rally of 30-1 longshot True Addiction (Yes It's True) to win Wednesday's $200,000 Adirondack Breeders' Cup S. (G2) at Saratoga. Trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Garrett Gomez, Octave recorded her first stakes victory, improving her overall mark to 3-2-1-0, and the two-year-old filly has now earned $173,200. Runner-up in the Astoria S. in her previous outing, the gray lass was overlooked at nearly 10-1 in the Adirondack. The winner settled in a good stalking position down the backstretch as Magical Ride broke running from her far outside post position. The heavy favorite ripped off opening splits in :21 4/5 and :45, but she was under heavy pressure first from Chagall (Successful Appeal), Octave's uncoupled stablemate, and then Tora (El Corredor). The pacesetter still held the advantage in midstretch, leading by a half-length through six furlongs in 1:11 4/5, but the battle had taken its toll. Octave rallied strongly to the lead and went on to post a 1 1/2-length decision, finishing 6 1/2 furlongs over the fast track in 1:19. She paid $21.60, $11.60 and $6 as the fifth choice in the field of nine. Monmouth shipper True Addiction closed from the back of the pack for second, a half-length better than Magical Ride, and boosted the exotics, giving back $27 and $8.40 in place money. Show was good for $3.10. The exacta returned $526, the trifecta $2,879 and the 3-2-10-8 superfecta, with 16-1 Post Invader (Salt Lake) in fourth, yielded a whopping $32,693. Tora, Chagall, Expertise (Hennessy) and Richwoman (Successful Appeal) came next under the wire. Lemon Drop Girl (Lemon Drop Kid) was eased after hitting the side of the gate at the start, and Early Vintage (Jump Start) was scratched. Bred in Kentucky by Mr. and Mrs. Martin Wygod, Octave was purchased for $350,000 at the 2005 Keeneland September sale. She's out of the stakes-winning and Grade 3-placed Belle Nuit (Dr. Carter), who is also the dam of Grade 2 queen Belle Cherie (Belong to Me), stakes winner Be Mine Tonight (Belong to Me) and a yearling filly by Yankee Gentleman. Pletcher said Octave will probably be pointed toward the $250,000 Matron S. (G1) at Belmont Park on September 23.
