Pomeroy proves best in Forego In just his second start for trainer Marty Wolfson, Silverleaf Farm's POMEROY (Boundary) bettered his rivals by 2 1/4 lengths in the $250,000 Forego S. (G1) at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday. The five-year-old bay sat off the lead in between rivals as the speedy Spanish Chestnut (Horse Chestnut [SAf]) traveled the first quarter-mile in :22 4/5. The eventual winner took the advantage prior to the half-mile mark in :45 3/5 as Spanish Chestnut faded. Pomeroy dug in when roused by jockey John Velazquez, keeping all other rivals at bay while completing the seven-furlong affair in 1:23 1/5 over the fast track. Sent off at 6-1, Pomeroy returned $14.20, $5.70 and $4.10, while leading exotics of $69 (exacta), $926 (trifecta) and $7,357 for the 8-11-3-10 superfecta. War Front (Danzig) left the gate at 5-1 and managed to get up for second after rating just off the pace throughout, giving back $5 and $3.80. Friendly Island (Crafty Friend) was just a neck back to take third, paying $9.70 at 36-1. Silver Wagon (Wagon Limit) was making his way up the rail in the final yards, but fell just short, hitting the wire in fourth. Following him were Mass Media (Touch Gold), Nightmare Affair (Out of Place), Awesome Twist (Awesome Again), Judiths Wild Rush (Wild Rush), Greeley's Galaxy (Mr. Greeley), Commentator (Distorted Humor) and Spanish Chestnut. Bred in Kentucky by Cherry Valley Farm LLC, Pomeroy is out of the winning mare Questress (Seeking the Gold), whose latest foals are an unraced two-year-old colt named Gateway West (Arch) and a yearling filly by Horse Chestnut (SAf). This was Pomeroy's second career Grade 1 victory, both coming at Saratoga. Purchased from the 2003 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Winter Mixed Sale for $300,000, he annexed the 2004 King's Bishop S. (G1) and won the Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. (G2) the next year. Pomeroy improved his record to 17-7-4-2, $845,050 with Saturday's win.
