Sea Siren strikes winning note at Arlington

Sea Siren was untouchable in the Arlington Matron

In Saturday's $150,000
Arlington Matron H. (G3), Adam Richey and Strode Stables' SEA SIREN (Stormy
Atlantic) was rebuffed in the wagering as the longest shot on the board at
nearly 15-1, but she had the last laugh when setting the pace
en route to an authoritative four-length score. With jockey Mark Guidry expertly
rationing her speed, the Ralph Nicks trainee dictated splits of :23 1/5, :46 4/5
and 1:11 1/5. When rivals Maggie Slew (Seattle Slew) and Sunset Kisses (Sky
Classic) each took a run at her, Guidry simply let out a notch, and Sea Siren
did the rest. Pouring it on through the stretch, the four-year-old bay got a
mile in 1:36 2/5 and completed the nine furlongs in 1:49 on the fast track."Ralph said the main thing was to get her out of the gate and not have to
check or anything because she gets discouraged real easily," Guidry said. "She
broke real good. I was a little worried on the backside because I thought we
were going pretty quick, but turning for home, I punched on her and she took
off."
Stop a Train (Devil His Due) closed for second, three-quarters of a length
ahead of Sunset Kisses, with the rest of the field well strung out. It was
another 9 3/4 lengths back to 3-2 favorite Take a Check (Touch Gold) in fourth,
who checked in 4 3/4 lengths to the good of a trailing Maggie Slew. Stop a
Train's entrymate, For Gillian (Gold Fever), was withdrawn.

Sea Siren furnished healthy mutuels of $31.60, $9.80 and $4 while keying the
$87.60 exacta and $289 trifecta (2-1-5). Stop a Train gave back $4.60 and $2.80
at nearly 7-2, and Sunset Kisses paid $2.80 at odds of 5-1.
By posting her first graded stakes win, Sea Siren was rebounding in a big way
from her disappointing effort in the Gardenia H. (G3), in which she faded to
finish last of 10. In her only other previous stakes attempt, she captured the Green
Oaks S. at Delta Downs in March of 2005. Her record now stands at 15-4-4-0 with a
bankroll of $193,110.
Bred by Marianne Siegel in Florida, the winner was purchased by her current
connections for $100,000 as a two-year-old in training at the 2004 Barretts
March sale. Sea Siren is out of the unraced Spend a Buck mare Spend It on Mom,
who has also produced the stakes-placed Faith to Faith (Prospector's Halo) and
Sweet Kayla Ann (Regal Search). Her most recent offspring are an unraced
juvenile colt named Two Bucks for Mom (Sweetsouthernsaint), an unnamed yearling
colt by Exchange Rate and a 2006 colt by Three Wonders.
