Mea Domina leads the way in Palomar

Janis R. Whitman's homebred MEA DOMINA (Dance Brightly) took the lead soon after the gates opened on Saturday's $189,000 Palomar Breeders' Cup H. (G2) at Del Mar and led all the way to record the neck victory under Tyler Baze. Trained by Ron McAnally, the five-year-old mare was sent off the near 6-1 fifth choice in the 10-horse field and returned $13.80, $6.80 and $5.20 while keying $1 exotics of $42.60 (exacta), $563 (trifecta) and $1,777 (11-2-6-9 superfecta).

Racing just off the rail, Mea Domina set splits of :23 2/5, :46 2/5, 1:09 4/5 and 1:33 3/5, all the while chased by Island Fashion (Petionville). Entering the final turn, the rest of the field began to catch up and Mea Domina found herself facing a new challenger in Three Degrees (Ire) (Singspiel [Ire]) as Island Fashion started backing up. Digging in under Baze, the game filly just held off her fast-closing rival while completing 1 1/16 miles on the firm turf in a new course record time of 1:39 3/5.

Three Degrees, the 5-1 fourth pick, paid $6.20 and $4.40 for her game last-to-second move. Another length back was Island Fashion, who held third by a nose over 3-1 favorite Shining Energy (Rahy) to give back $6.40 at 9-1. Next under the line came Bond Deal (Ire) (Pivotal), Berbatim (Bernstein), Sharp Lisa (Dixieland Band), Amorama (Fr) (Sri Pekan), Polyfirst (Fr) (Poliglote [GB]) and Star Parade (Arg) (Parade Marshal). Singalong (GB) (Singspiel [Ire]) was scratched while Lock and Key (Ire) (Key of Luck) didn't draw in from the also-eligible list.

The Kentucky-bred Mea Domina was making just her second start of the year in this one, running third in the Osunitas H. on August 9 after ending 2005 with victories in the Gamely Breeders' Cup H. (G1) and Las Palmas H. (G2). The bay mare boosted her earnings to $693,628 with this win and now shows a 13-7-3-1 career mark.

Out of the Grade 3-winning Madame Pandit (Wild Again), who was second in the 1998 Santa Monica H. (G1), Mea Domina counts as half-siblings an unraced juvenile colt named Smart Stripe (Smart Strike), an unnamed yearling colt by Pulpit and a 2006 filly by Seeking the Gold.
