Lisa M gets up in thrilling Lassie Larry D Bielfeldt's homebred LISA M (Banker's Gold) closed with a rush from the back of the pack to take a thrilling rendition of the $120,000 Arlington-Washington Breeders' Cup Lassie S. (G3) over the sloppy Arlington track on Sunday. Trained by David Kassen, the two-year-old lass sat last early as Sea the Joy (Stormy Atlantic), 4-5 favorite Change Up (Distorted Humor) and Nola Star (Three Wonders) contested fractions of :22 3/5, :45 and 1:11 2/5 for the opening six furlongs. As the field turned for home, Sutra (Meadowlake), who rated off the leaders in fourth in the early going, asserted herself and opened up a lead in midstretch before coming up a nose short in the photo. Lisa M completed the one mile in 1:38 4/5 and rewarded her faithful backers with mutuels of $73, $22 and $9.60 at 35-1 under Carlos Marquez Jr. Sutra did everything right in here except for winning the photo in a solid effort at 8-1. The runner-up returned $9.20 and $6.80 while completing the $541 exacta. Call the Kitty (Langfuhr) closed strongly but fell a half-length short of the place. The 48-1 shot paid $9.40 and finished off the $9,727.60 trifecta. Natalicat (Tactical Cat) made a bold move turning for home but flattened out late to finish fourth. At 24-1, the filly sat on the bottom of the $41,150 superfecta ($1) (2-1-10-7). Nola Star was next, followed by Lenaro (Buddha), Change Up and Sea The Joy, while Dreaming of Anna (Rahy) and Littlebitabling (Carson City) were withdrawn. Lisa M was exiting a distant fourth-place finish in the Top Flight S. but improved off that effort in a big way here. The chestnut now sports a mark of 3-2-0-0 with earnings of $80,527. Bred in the Bluegrass State, the winner was produced from the winning Lords Guest (Lord At War [Arg]) and counts an unnamed yearling filly by With Approval as a half-sister.
