Wanderin Boy wires Brooklyn

Arthur Hancock III's homebred WANDERIN BOY (Seeking the Gold) took the lead out of the gate and never looked back en route to a 1 1/2-length tally in the $158,500 Brooklyn Breeders' Cup H. (G2) at Belmont Park on Saturday. The Nick Zito pupil set solid splits of :23 2/5, :46 2/5 and 1:10 1/5 for the opening six furlongs, with the 9-1 Reverberate (Thunder Gulch) on his flank. As the front runner turned for home, Reverberate could not keep up, and Wanderin Boy opened up an insurmountable lead under Javier Castellano. The winner completed the nine furlongs in 1:47 4/5 on the fast track while keeping the late-charging Awesome Twist (Awesome Again) at bay. As the even-money favorite, Wanderin Boy paid $4, $3.30 and $2.40 while keying the $29.60 exacta and $131 trifecta (7-3-5).

Awesome Twist moved in midpack along the rail before dipping outside in the stretch and closing well to earn the place. The 9-1 shot was good for $7.20 and $4.10. Reverberate dug deep in the latter stages to earn the show spot, paying $4.20. Funny Cide (Distorted Humor) was next and trailed by 2-1 second choice Good Reward (Storm Cat) and We Can Seek (Chi) (Seeker's Reward), while expected pace factor Take the Bluff (Pine Bluff) was scratched.

"My horse (Wanderin Boy) likes to be nice and easy on the lead," Castellano said. "The first quarter and second quarter were kind of slow. I was happy when I saw the scratch of Take the Bluff. It worked out good. I went to the lead and set a slow pace."

Wanderin Boy earned his third graded win in moving his career line to 13-7-3-1, $498,259. The chestnut had taken the 2005 Mineshaft H. (G3) at the Fair Grounds and this year's Ben Ali S. (G3) at Keeneland. His resume also includes a game runner-up effort in the Pimlico Special H. (G1) in May.

Bred in the Bluegrass State, the winner is out of the multiple stakes-winning Pleasant Colony mare Vid Kid, and was preceded in stakes glory by his half-brother, multiple Grade 3 hero Early Warning (Summer Squall). Vid Kid has also produced Grade 2-placed Vivid Sunset (Mt. Livermore) as well as an unnamed 2006 colt by Menifee.
