Diamond Stripes decorates Pegasus

Four Roses Thoroughbreds' DIAMOND STRIPES (Notebook) remained unbeaten with an impressive victory in Friday night's $250,000 Pegasus S. (G3) at the Meadowlands, rallying strongly from off the pace to win his stakes debut going away by 1 1/2 lengths. Trained by Richard Dutrow and ridden by Edgar Prado, the three-year-old gelding is now three for three.

"I'm very excited about this horse," Prado commented. "He's very professional both in the morning and in his races. He had plenty left when we hit the wire. I think you'll see a lot of him as a four-year-old. He's really something good."

Diamond Stripes was away slowly and shuffled back early as Gottcha Gold (Coronado's Quest) sprinted to the fore and led the way through fractions in :23 3/5, :47 4/5 and 1:11. The winner advanced while widest of all on the backstretch and had emerged with the lead by the top of the stretch, passing the mile mark in 1:35 with a half-length advantage. The gray finished well, with a final eighth in :12 1/5 to finish nine furlongs over the fast track in 1:47 1/5. The 5-2 second choice paid $7, $3.80 and $3.20.

On Board Again (Awesome Again) gave a good account of himself to finish second, returning $5 and $4.40 at 7-2. It was 1 1/2 lengths back to the 8-1 Hesanoldsalt (Broad Brush), who was good for $4. The exacta was $32.60 and the 5-1-6 ($1) trifecta $84.30. Gottcha Gold, Harborage (Monarchos), Awfully Smart (Anees), Fairbanks (Giant's Causeway) and 9-5 favorite High Cotton (Dixie Union) completed the order of finish. Roman Dynasty (Theatrical [Ire]) was scratched.

Purchased for $340,000 at the 2004 Keeneland September Yearling sale, Diamond Stripes is out of the winning Romantic Summer (On to Glory), making him a full brother to Grade 2 victor Summer Note and current stakes winner and Grade 3-placed Summer Book. He also has a 2006 half-sister by Yes It's True. Bred in Florida by Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Rogers Jr., Diamond Stripes has now earned $207,000. He broke his maiden at Belmont Park in July and was exiting a 3 1/4-length allowance win at Saratoga on September 2.
