Phoenix Lands at Keeneland Summerplace Farm's homebred KELLY'S LANDING (Patton) entered Saturday's $268,600 Phoenix Breeders' Cup S. (G3) at Keeneland as an outside chance, but in the end proved best under an enterprising ride from jockey Rafael Bejarano. Running near the back early on, Bejarano sent Kelly's Landing to the rail in the stretch, skimming along the inside before bursting clear and getting up by a length while finishing six furlongs on the Polytrack in 1:09 4/5. As the 12-1 second-longest shot in the nine-horse field, Kelly's Landing was worth $26.20, $11.80 and $7.80 while Areyoutalkintome (Smokester) paid $7 and $5.20 at 6-1 after running wide while stalking the pacesetters. It was another length back to Level Playingfield (Level Sands), who returned $6.20 at 10-1 for holding Coach Jimi Lee (Roar) to fourth by a neck. The exotics paid $200 (exacta), $1,752.80 (trifecta) and $10,591.20 (4-9-3-11 superfecta). Silver Wagon (Wagon Limit), Spanish Chestnut (Horse Chestnut [SAf]), Judiths Wild Rush (Wild Rush), Vicarage (Vicar) and Elusive Jazz (Elusive Quality) rounded out the order under the wire while Weigelia (Safely's Mark) and Caller One (Phone Trick) were scratched. Kelly's Landing captured his only other stakes win last year, taking the Aristides Breeders' Cup H. (G3), and ran second in that same event this year. From a 17-7-3-1 career mark, the Eddie Kenneally-trained five-year-old has earned $492,557. The Kentucky-bred gelding is the only stakes winner out of multiple stakes queen Best Game (Great Above) and has an unraced juvenile half-sister named Torch Song (Sultry Song).
