Symphony Sid waltzes home in Burke

SYMPHONY SID (Unbridled) broke from the far outside 7 post in Saturday's $100,000 Carleton F. Burke H. (G3) at the Oak Tree meet, but quickly moved to the fore under jockey Michael Baze and opened up an insurmountable lead all the way to the wire. Trained by Mike Mitchell, the six-year-old chestnut was 5 1/2 lengths clear at the finish after setting splits of :23, :46, 1:10 1/5, 1:34 4/5 and 1:59 2/5, finishing 1 1/2 miles on the firm turf in a stakes-record time of 2:24.

Sent off the 5-1 third choice, Symphony Sid rewarded his backers with payouts of $12.80, $4.40 and $2.60. Artiste Royal (Ire) (Danehill) ran in second throughout as the 4-5 favorite and gave back $2.80 and $2.10 while ending the $11.10 exacta ($1). Runaway Dancer (Runaway Groom), winner of this event in 2003, finished another 1 3/4 lengths back in third after racing in that position throughout, paying $2.40 at 7-2 and completing the $40.20 trifecta ($1). Mighty Mysterious (Mystery Storm) was another 2 1/2 lengths back in fourth and rounded out the $197 superfecta (8-6-5-1) ($1), while the 2003 Burke runner-up, Labirinto (Theatrical [Ire]), Conall Cearnach (Cozzene) and Sarafan (Lear Fan) finished out the order under the wire. Don Incauto (Arg) (Roy) was scratched.

Symphony Sid, owned by Bongo Racing Stable, Tighten 'Er Up Racing and Tjosvold, earned his first stakes victory in this one after running third in the San Quentin S. in March. That event came while he was still under the tutelage of Jerry Hollendorfer, who lost the chestnut for a $50,000 claiming price at Del Mar on July 19. Since then, Symphony Sid has run fifth in the Del Mar H. (G2) and second in an allowance/optional claimer prior to this one. He moved his overall record to 22-5-5-3 with $191,240 in career earnings.

Bred in Kentucky by William S. Farish and Ogden M. Phipps, Symphony Sid sold for $60,000 to his past connections at the 2001 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He is the second registered foal out of the unraced Happy Tune (A.P. Indy) and counts as half-siblings Grade 3 winner High Cotton (Dixie Union), a yearling colt named Times Gone By (Giant's Causeway) and an unnamed weanling colt by Tale of the Cat. His second dam is Hum Along (Fappiano), who produced 1996 champion two-year-old filly and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Storm Song (Summer Squall).
