One Off scores in San Marcos Jane and Burt Bacharach's ONE OFF (GB) (Barathea [Ire]) came from behind in dramatic fashion to take the $150,000 San Marcos S. (G2) by three-quarters of a length on Sunday at Santa Anita. Racing at the back of the field, One Off was steadied early under jockey Brice Blanc while pacesetter Hello Sunday (Fr) (Poliglote [GB]) and Boboman (Kingmambo) dueled through fractions of :24, :49, 1:13 2/5 and 1:37 2/5. Heroi Do Bafra (Brz) (Royal Academy) briefly seized command from the tiring leaders in the stretch, but by that point One Off was rallying with Blanc. Notable Guest (Kingmambo) also loomed boldly, taking a narrow lead in deep stretch, but he could not fend off One Off, who stopped the teletimer in 2:01 2/5 on the firm turf. Second in last year's San Juan Capistrano Invitational H. (G2), the Neil Drysdale pupil furthered his line to 27-9-5-0, $307,354, while garnering his first career stakes win. "He got squeezed back (after the start) and his head came up, but it was a blessing in disguise, because the horse loved it, didn't he?" Drysdale said. "He was just traveling along at the back and came whoosh! I thought he did it very easily." The victor, sent off at 11-1, returned $24.80, $9.80 and $11.60, and was followed by Notable Guest at 9-2, who rewarded his backers with payouts of $6.60 and $11 while finishing out the $74.70 exacta ($1). Running third was Drysdale's other charge, Obrigado (Fr) (Enrique), who gave back $6.20 at 5-2 and ended the $430.90 trifecta ($1). Heroi Do Bafra completed the $1,456.50 superfecta ($1) (4-6-3-8), while Clipperdown (Ire) (Green Desert), Don Incauto (Arg) (Roy), Hello Sunday and 6-5 favorite Boboman rounded out the order of finish. Bred in Great Britain by Dr. A.J. O'Reilly and Skymarc Farm, One Off is the first registered foal out of the Group 3-placed On Call (Alleged).
