Silver Wagon rolls in General George

Four Roses Thoroughbreds' SILVER WAGON (Wagon Limit) rallied boldly from off the pace to capture the $285,000 General George Breeders' Cup H. (G2), the Presidents' Day feature at Laurel Park. Piloted by Edgar Prado, the six-year-old gray delivered a strong kick to reel in Ah Day (Malibu Moon) in deep stretch and strode 1 1/4 lengths clear at the wire. Silver Wagon, who was shouldering the top weight of 120 pounds, finished seven furlongs on the fast track in 1:23 to return $3.80, $2.40 and $2.20 as the 4-5 favorite.

"He broke sharp, and I was right behind the speed," Prado said. "I was able to take him outside, and you saw what he can do. I wanted to be three or four lengths off the lead, and I was pretty comfortable with where I was. I was confident. He's a nice horse. My horse has another gear."

Ah Day pressed the pace through the opening quarter of :23 1/5, and the accomplished Maryland-bred thrust his head in front through the half-mile in :46 1/5. He opened up a daylight advantage in the lane, clocking 1:10 2/5 for six furlongs, but could not contain the winner's explosive move. Sent off as the 7-2 second choice, Ah Day gave back $3.60 and $2.60 for his commendable runner-up performance. Another 1 1/2 lengths back in third came early leader Ryan's for Real (Sword Dance [Ire]), who yielded $4 at odds of nearly 10-1. The exotics were worth $14.40 (exacta) and $87.80 (trifecta), and with the nearly 4-1 Will He Shine (Silver Deputy) in fourth, the 4-6-1-7 superfecta ($1) totaled $115.20. Rounding out the order under the wire were Your Bluffing (Pine Bluff), Judiths Wild Rush (Wild Rush), Gold Cluster (Formal Gold), City Weekend (Carson City) and Mach Speed (A.P. Indy).

Silver Wagon is currently trained by Tony Dutrow, who is taking care of the Grade 1 winner while his brother, Richard Dutrow, serves out a suspension. With this third stakes score on his resume, the winner improved his record to 23-6-3-6 and boosted his earnings to $979,193. As a juvenile, Silver Wagon captured the 2003 Hopeful S. (G1) at Saratoga, and last year, he stormed to a 5 1/2-length tally in the Sport Page Breeders' Cup H. (G3). He has also placed in eight stakes, including the 2005 editions of the Metropolitan Mile (G1) and Forego S. (G1). Last time out, the gray was a closing third in the 1 1/8-mile Sunshine Millions Classic, and he relished the turn-back in trip here.

Bred in Florida by Mr. and Mrs. Leverett S. Miller, Silver Wagon was purchased for $120,000 as a two-year-old in training in the 2003 OBS February sale. He is out of the winning So Ritzy (Darn That Alarm), whose youngest offspring is a gray yearling colt by Smarty Jones. Silver Wagon is a full brother to multiple stakes victor Rehoboth, whose biggest score so far came in the Carl G. Rose Classic H. at Calder on November 11.
