Sweet reward for Fervor in Shirley Jones Kinsman Stable's homebred SWEET FERVOR (Seeking the Gold) closed dramatically to take the $200,000 Shirley Jones Breeders' Cup H. (G2) by one length at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. Trained by Bill Mott, the four-year-old chestnut miss raced next to last under jockey Fernando Jara as 8-5 favorite Any Limit (Limit Out) led the eight-horse field through fractions of :22 2/5, :45 1/5 and 1:09 3/5 for the opening six furlongs over the fast main track. Rallying fast on the outside, Sweet Fervor passed six rivals in the final three-eighths of a mile to capture the seven-furlong event in 1:22 3/5. The winner keyed the $25.80 exacta ($1), $115.90 trifecta ($1) and $326.20 superfecta ($1) (1-3-8-9) while paying out $18.60, $6 and $4.60 at 8-1. Any Limit gave back $3.20 and $3 after finishing 1 1/2 lengths ahead of My Lucky Free (Mazel Trick), who returned $4 for the show at 5-1. Leah's Secret (Tiger Ridge) rounded out the superfecta at 5-2 and was followed by Amazing Speed (Langfuhr), Getcozywithkaylee (Zafarrancho [Arg]), Stormy Kiss (Arg) (Bernstein) and Stolen Prayer (Songandaprayer). Sugar Swirl (Touch Gold) was scratched. Bred in Kentucky, Sweet Fervor is out of the winning mare Undeniably (In Reality), making her a half-sister to Grade 2-winning millionaire and sire Concerto (Chief's Crown) as well as Grade 3 winner Illusioned (Woodman) and 1999 Florida Derby (G1) runner-up Wondertross (Chief's Crown). Sweet Fervor's granddam is Grade 1 winner Past Forgetting (Messenger of Song). Sweet Fervor recorded her first graded win. She also captured the Gasparilla S. last year and now boasts a 6-4-0-0 record with $209,700 in earnings.
