Fox Hill Farms Inc.'s HARD SPUN (Danzig) impressively pulled clear to a 3 1/4-length tally in the $500,000 Lane's End S. (G2) over the Polytrack at Turfway Park on Saturday. The Larry Jones charge broke alertly and rated in third early, tracking splits of :22 3/5, :47 1/5 and 1:11 3/5 for the opening six furlongs. Turning for home, the talented sophomore colt swept to the front under little urging and opened up soon after, reaching one mile in 1:36 3/5 before completing the nine-furlong feature in 1:49 2/5. Piloted by regular rider Mario Pino, the winner was sent off the 5-2 second choice and gave back $7.20, $4.60 and $4.80.

"This horse will do anything you want him to do." Jones said. "I could tell he was wanting to run, but he listened for Mario to ask him. He's very coachable."

Sedgefield (Smart Strike) rated well off the early pace before putting in his run, reaching contention turning for home before finishing a clear second at 12-1. The runner-up was worth $11.20 and $6 while completing the $98.60 exacta. Joe Got Even (Stephen Got Even) showed good interest late but was never getting to the winner, settling for third another 3 1/4 lengths back at 13-1. Show paid $6.80 and the trifecta returned $777. The 10-12-9-11 superfecta rewarded backers with a payout of $4,170.20, with For You Reppo (El Corredor) coming in the fourth spot at 7-1.

Starbase (Tale of the Cat) was another length back and trailed by slight favorite Twilight Meteor (Smart Strike), Highest Degree (Menifee), Sports Town (Belong to Me), Approval Rating (Lemon Drop Kid), Bullara (Holy Bull), Helios (Stormin Fever) and Forefathers (Gone West).

Hard Spun made up for his lone defeat in the Southwest S. most recently by earning his second graded score and fourth overall stakes tally. The Keystone State-bred captured the Lecomte S. (G3) two prior, which followed triumphs in the Port Penn S. and Pennsylvania Nursery S. For his career, the bay boasts $473,470 in earnings from a 6-5-0-0 mark.

The winner, bred by Michael Moran and Brushwood Stable, was produced from the stakes-winning Turkish Tryst (Turkoman), who was third in the 1996 Matchmaker S. (G2). Hard Spun is a half-brother to stakes heroine Our Rite of Spring (Stravinsky) as well as the multiple stakes-placed Wild Current (Wild Again). He RNA'd at $485,000 as a Keeneland September yearling.

"More than likely," stated Jones on future plans for the colt, "and in a perfect world, our next start will be in the ($750,000) Blue Grass Stakes (G1) (on April 14). He seems to like Polytrack and Keeneland is almost like home. We definitely want one more prep."
