Citronnade leaves no doubt in Santa Ana

Citronnade earned her third straight stakes win in the Santa Ana (Benoit Photo)
Stronach Stables' homebred CITRONNADE (Lemon Drop Kid) took the lead early and left her overmatched foes in her wake late in impressively taking the $150,000 Santa Ana H. (G2) by 5 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita on Sunday. Piloted by David Flores, the four-year-old was sharp early and cruised through early splits of :24, :48 and 1:10 4/5 for the opening six furlongs before spurting clear turning for home, giving her competitors no chance late in a superb effort. The Bobby Frankel charge stopped the teletimer in 1:46 1/5 for nine furlongs on the firm lawn, and returned $3.60, $3 and $2.60 as the 4-5 choice.

Conveyor's Angel (Conveyor) saved ground while third in the early stages, and closed admirably to finish a clear second. The runner-up completed the $7.40 exacta ($1) while paying $7.60 and $5 at 10-1. Memorette (Memo [Chi]) showed good late energy to earn third another 2 1/4 lengths behind, finishing off the $66.20 trifecta ($1) at 11-1. Show was worth $4.80. Flip Flop (Fr) (Zieten) closed mildly on the outside to sit on the bottom of the $309.10 superfecta (2-5-1-8) ($1) at odds of 20-1. Quiet Royal (Royal Academy), the 3-1 second choice, faded to fifth and was trailed by Singalong (GB) (Singspiel [Ire]) and Foxysox (GB) (Foxhound). Riche Americaine (Fr) (Loup Solitaire), Grat (A.P. Indy) and Solva (GB) (Singspiel [Ire]) were withdrawn.

Citronnade's career has really taken off since she switched to the lawn, over which she has captured four of five starts, including the San Gorgonio H. (G2), Graceful Darby S. and Audrey Skirball-Kenis S. The bay filly sports a lifetime mark of 9-6-2-0 with earnings that now stand at $342,800.

The winner was bred in the Bluegrass State and is the fourth black-type winner produced from the stakes-winning Primarily (Lord at War [Arg]). She counts Canadian champions Poetically (Silver Deputy) and Primaly (Alydeed), as well as Grade 3 winner Whiskey Wisdom (Wild Again), as half-siblings.

Citronnade also has an unraced three-year-old half-sister named Stella Prima (El Prado [Ire]) and a two-year-old half-sister named Be Glorious (Red Bullet).
