Jambalaya, 'Hotstuf' spice up Pan American finish

Kingfield Racing Stable's JAMBALAYA (Langfuhr) drove to the front in midstretch and held off the hard charging Hotstufanthensome (Awesome Again) to score in Saturday's $150,000 Pan American H. (G3). Trained by Catherine Day-Phillips and ridden by Javier Castellano, the Canadian-bred gelding completed 1 1/2 miles on Gulfstream Park's firm turf in 2:24 4/5.

In the early going, Jambalaya settled beautifully along the rail, not far off the tempo established by Fri Guy (Theatrical [Ire]) through splits of :24 2/5, :49 2/5, 1:14 1/5 and 1:38 2/5. Entering the stretch, Ramazutti (Honor Grades) took over from the pacesetter, while Castellano angled Jambalaya off the inside to take aim on the leading pair. With long, raking strides, Jambalaya mowed down his rivals and looked set for a daylight victory. Hotstufanthensome was just hitting his best stride, however. His spirited late rally in the waning yards made things interesting, but Jambalaya had done enough to secure the half-length victory, returning $5.40, $3.60 and $2.60 as the 8-5 favorite.

The 5-1 Hotstufanthensome gave back $5 and $4.20 for finishing 2 3/4 lengths ahead of a game Fri Guy, who came back to deny Ramazutti by a nose for third. Show paid $9.20 at odds of 24-1. The $1 exotics were worth $13 (exacta), $213.80 (trifecta) and $1,136.70 (3-9-2-5 superfecta). Drilling for Oil (Giant's Causeway) reported home fifth, followed by Interpatation (Langfuhr), Revved Up (Sultry Song), Lima Papa (Unbridled's Song), Dynantonia (Dynaformer), A. J. Melini (Matty G) and Murch (Mr. Greeley). Pellegrino (Brz) (Nugget Point [Ire]) was scratched.

Jambalaya was notching his fifth career stakes tally and his second in a row, having captured the Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Turf S. (G1) last time out. As a sophomore in 2005, the dark bay gelding landed the Saranac S. (G3) at Saratoga and the Breeders' S. at Woodbine, the third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. Last year, Jambalaya added the Singspiel S. and placed in three Grade 2 events. In his 2007 debut, he finished an excellent third in the Canadian Turf H. (G3). His mark now stands at 18-7-1-5 with $889,793 in earnings.

Bred by Gustav Schickedanz, the winner was sold for a mere $2,500 at the 2003 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The five-year-old was produced by the winning Muskrat Suzie (Vice Regent), who is a full sister to 1996 Cup and Saucer S. scorer Muskrat Sammy. Jambalaya has a juvenile half-brother by Johannesburg named Gauteng.
