Ermine earns her grade in Apple Blossom

Oxbow Racing's ERMINE (Exchange Rate) got her much deserved Grade 1 win when rallying from midpack to eclipse the $500,000 Apple Blossom H. (G1) at Oaklawn Park on Saturday. Trained by Ronny Werner, the classy four-year-old tracked in sixth to the stretch but was moving like a winner every step of the way late, pulling away from pacesetter Take D' Tour (Tour d'Or) by 1 1/4 lengths under the wire. The chestnut filly stopped the timer for 1 1/16 miles in 1:44 under Eddie Castro, and gave back $8, $4 and $2.40 as the 3-1 second choice.

Take D' Tour took the early lead, running through fractions of :23 1/5 and :47 before being briefly headed at the six-furlong call. Take D' Tour again pulled clear in midstretch but could not hold off the late-charging winner in the latter stages. The second placer was 4 1/4 lengths clear of 6-5 choice Round Pond (Awesome Again), who was one-paced late in her third-place performance. Place paid $5.20 and $3, while the favorite was worth $2.40 to show. The exacta was good for $40.20, the trifecta paid $129.60, and Baghdaria (Royal Academy) finished off the $1,087.80 superfecta at 22-1 another 1 1/2 lengths farther back. Rahys' Appeal (Rahy) was next and followed by River Savage (Brz) (First American), Lemons Forever (Lemon Drop Kid) and India (Hennessy).

Ermine boosted her bankroll to $851,082, while upping her record to 13-5-5-0. The miss captured the Falls City H. (G2) and Honeybee S., and was second in the Kentucky Oaks (G1), Santa Maria H. (G1) and Santa Margarita Invitational H. (G1).

Bred in Florida by Amy Bondon-Peltz, the filly was purchased for the bargain price of $45,000 at the 2004 OBS August Yearling sale. She is the third registered foal out of Red Mischief (Thirty Six Red), and counts the two-year-old colt Trippin Up (Trippi) and the yearling filly Legendary Peace (Peace Rules) as half-siblings.
