Street Sounds holds on in Beaumont

Hidden Creek Farm's STREET SOUNDS (Street Cry [Ire]) had not run since November and was racing on Polytrack for the first time, but the sophomore proved that none of that mattered when driving to a game victory in Thursday's $250,000 Beaumont S. (G2) at Keeneland. With Edgar Prado aboard, the dark bay broke sharply and pressed the pace on the outside through an opening quarter in :23 1/5. Street Sounds put her head in front while reeling off a half-mile in :45 2/5, opened up by a length through six furlongs in 1:09, and kept on resolutely to hold off 3-2 favorite Forever Together (Belong to Me) by a neck at the line. The Michael Matz-trained winner returned $20.40, $7.40 and $4.80 as the 9-1 fifth choice in the seven-horse field.

"We weren't sure we were making the right move because she did so well on the turf," Matz said, "but she had trained well on the Polytrack, and it worked out well today."

"She showed a lot of courage because I saw that horse (Forever Together) on the outside coming, and she gave me an extra effort," Prado said.

Forever Together settled just off the pace in the early going, then loomed boldly inside the final furlong to reduce the winner's margin. The gray couldn't quite collar Street Sounds, however, and suffered her first career loss from four outings. Forever Together gave back $3.20 and $3.20 and ended the $72.20 exacta. Palace Pier (Out of Place) dueled with the winner through the first half-mile and retreated to third in the stretch, another 1 3/4 lengths adrift of the runner-up. As the longest shot on the board at 33-1, the third-placer paid $7 and rounded out the $867 trifecta. Silverinyourpocket (Silver Deputy) closed mildly for fourth at 5-1, resulting in a $3,080 superfecta (8-6-3-4). Baroness Thatcher (Johannesburg), the 2-1 second choice, was rank while being rated early and never got in the hunt thereafter, checking in fifth. Following her under the wire were Eternal Grace (Gilded Time) and Sutra (Meadowlake). Pro Pink (Touch Gold) was scratched.

Street Sounds was posting her second stakes victory, having captured the Selima S. on the turf in her juvenile finale. The dark bay switched to the turf in her third career start and broke her maiden impressively by 6 3/4 lengths at Delaware Park, and in her stakes debut next time out, she finished third in the grassy Jessamine S. at Keeneland. With the Beaumont winner's check of $155,000, she more than doubled her bankroll to $258,400 from her 6-3-0-2 line.

Bred by Anderson Farms and Rod Ferguson in Ontario, Canada, Street Sounds was sold to her current connections for $400,000 at the 2005 Keeneland September Yearling sale. She is out of Grade 2-placed Rare Opportunity (Danzig Connection), who is also the dam of Canadian stakes queen Silver Highlight (Silver Charm), a juvenile colt named Victory Pass (Aljabr) and an unnamed yearling by Street Cry (Ire), a full sister to the winner.
