Charm the Giant scores in Wilshire Deborah McAnally's homebred CHARM THE GIANT (Ire) (Giant's Causeway) ran near the back in Wednesday's $111,500 Wilshire H. (G3) on Hollywood Park's opening day, before rallying four wide into the stretch and coming with a game rush to post a 1 1/2-length victory under Michael Baze. The Ron McAnally-trained five-year-old mare finished a mile on the firm turf in 1:34 as the 7-2 second choice, paying $9, $5.60 and $4. Sohgol (Ire) (Singspiel [Ire]) saved ground on the inside before splitting horses and rallying to take second by three parts of a length, returning $12.40 and $8.80 while ending the $59.30 exacta ($1) at 13-1. Ghurra (War Chant) was never far off the pace and held well for third, giving back $10.40 at 21-1 and finishing the $759.10 trifecta ($1). It was another half-length back to early pacesetter Double Trouble (Brz) (Wild Event), who completed the $5,091 superfecta ($1) (9-7-2-1) as the near 5-2 favorite. Following the top four under the line were Private Banking (Fr) (Anabaa), Polyfirst (Fr) (Poliglote [GB]), Singalong (GB) (Singspiel [Ire]), Flip Flop (Fr) (Zieten), Quemar (NZ) (Haafiz [Ire]) and Witch Woman (Awesome Again). Charm the Giant earned her first graded credit here, having captured the Hillsborough H. prior to this one. The bay mare ran third, placed second via disqualification, in the Tuzla H. two back and now owns a 13-6-3-1 career mark with $294,734 in lifetime earnings. The Irish bred is out of multiple Grade 2 queen Olympic Charmer (Olympio) and has an unraced sophomore half-brother named Rock the Rock (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar [Ire]).
