Saint Anddan cruises in Churchill Downs

Mr. and Mrs. William K. Warren Jr.'s SAINT ANDDAN (A.P. Indy) took charge entering the stretch and sailed home by two lengths in Saturday's $277,750 Churchill Downs S. (G2), the first of five graded stakes on the Kentucky Derby undercard. With Rafael Bejarano in the irons, the Bobby Frankel charge pressed the pacesetting Cougar Cat (Storm Cat) through fractions of :23 and :45 3/5 before easily disposing of that rival. Saint Anddan quickly opened up on the field and was never threatened, reeling off seven furlongs on Churchill's good, sealed track in 1:22 1/5. Overlooked in the wagering at 8-1, the five-year-old bay furnished mutuels of $18.40, $5.80 and $3.20 while bagging his first graded stakes score.

The even-money favorite, Ah Day (Malibu Moon), loped at the tail of the six-horse field at the half-mile marker, but he made steady progress along the inside to finish second by 2 1/2 lengths to pay $3 and $2.40. Will He Shine (Silver Deputy) raced evenly for third, yielding $3 at odds of 7-2. The exotics were worth $47.40 (exacta), $130.40 (trifecta) and $263.40 (7-4-3-6 superfecta) with the 3-1 Istan (Gone West) in fourth. Cougar Cat faded to fifth, followed by Moon's Halo (Halo's Image). Wanderin Boy (Seeking the Gold) and Half Ours (Unbridled's Song), the winner and runner-up in Friday's Alysheba S. (G3), were scratched, along with Junior College (Ide).

Saint Anddan improved his record to 13-5-4-1 while increasing his earnings to $385,670. In his stakes debut last time out at Fair Grounds, he posted a game front-running victory in the Duncan F. Kenner Breeders' Cup S.

Bred by Manganaro LLC in Kentucky, Saint Anddan was a $1.85 million yearling at the 2003 Keeneland September sale. He is out of the stakes-placed Adoradancer (Danzig Connection), who also has an unraced juvenile filly named Goo Goo Eyes (Mr. Greeley) and an unnamed yearling colt by Mineshaft. This is the family of recent Beaumont S. (G2) queen Street Sounds (Street Cry [Ire]).
